I just took a look at my factory air filter on my 2005 at 7k miles and was surprised at how dirty it was. I have been on paved roads since day one. The fiberglass mat and "W" pleats in the filter media were packed with dirt and bugs. My filter minder only showed less than 1/2 plugged. Needless to say I replaced it with a Fleetguard Filter from Geno's.

changed mine at 6k and the stocker was trashed with all road driving like you. Went with a true-flow drop-in and swiss cheese air box and then went to afe stage one. The oiled filters last a good 5-7k also and then need servicing as well. The cummins is a huge air pump, keep its restrictions clean.

Visual inspection is not a reliable indicator, the filter minder is a better method. I ran my original filter to the 30k specified and that's just about when the filter minder hit the edge of the red.

This was on and off road with towing.

I know my filter minder on the '00 has only been pulled down one time(not sure that thing works right anyways) but i have changed my air filter at every oil change(7500 miles) or before, mine usually got changed before the filter minder even thought about moving, im anal about clean air filters under the hood and i live in the country on dirt roads so that speeds up the process. .

I changed mine at 3k... was pulling the filter minder in 3/4 of the way... all it saw was highway.

The stock filters have over 50% of the pleat glued shut. Take the precleaner off and look... there is only about a 6"x6" hole in the middle of the filter.

Punch a 3" or 4" hole in the bottom of the air box and cover it with coarse mesh screen to keep larger debris out. This doubled my filter life with the stock airbox.

I been thinking of someway to get more air into the engine by eliminating the box and going with a cone type filter setup on the '00... I know the fleetguard air filters i get from genos i have had good service out of, never had a problem with them clogging or pulling the filter minder down at all, and they get trashed at every oil change.

I noticed on the 92 that this engine seems to be a air hog machine it will take in all the air it can and then some of course the more it gets the better, may have to go with a K&N but not sure they have anything other than those oiled filters and im not up for dealing with that. Do they make a regular air filter that doesn't need oiling?

I opened my air filter box for the first time at 17,000 miles and almost had a stroke!! I never saw a filter that dirty, ever. The filter minder was fine, but I'll most likely change it a 10K intervals from now on, just for my sanity.
