Air Filter Change Interval

I wonder about the air filter change interval. I've got 15k miles on the truck and had to change the filter twice already (I put in an aFe today). Both times the filter was solid black (I'll be taking a picture of the old filter shortly). The first time the filter minder was close to 60% after 5k miles and this time the filter minder had not moved past 0%.



Anyway, I wonder what everyone else's experience has been.

How much driving do you do on dirt roads? That's a big factor.



How are things in Parker CO? I just moved from Aurora last Aug.

I don't do too much driving on dirt roads. What's different to me is that the dirt is black whereas on all my other vehicles (gassers) the dirt is brown.



Cold today, got 5 inches of snow last night. The first major snow on the front range this winter. January was the driest January in recorded history as was the summer.

Just my 2 cents, but an air filter, or any filter for that matter, cannot be changed too soon or too often. A clean filter is cheap insurance. Fram used to say it best (before their filters went to hell) -"pay me now or pay me later. "

I wouldn't use a Fram oil filter but their air filters have worked well for me. I don't know what to make of K&N's little filter gimmick we see now and then at the auto parts stores but when I put a Purolator or Mopar paper filter in, there's no change in sound. When I put a Fram filter in, for the first couple of thousand miles, I can hear more turbo music. I will likely go with Fleetguard for all my filters but if caught in a pinch, I wouldn't have a problem with a Fram "air" filter. They work and have a good warranty.

I haven't changed the filter in my '03 yet but it is pulling the filter minder down a little bit. My '95 pulled the filter minder down too when it was new and had the foam/paper filter.

I wonder if all the cold running fuel rich traffic, oil furnaces, fireplaces, etc might have to do with the black filters?
