Air Filter Change

Thanks, TDR Staff

Want to test drive an aftermarket transmission in Calif.

Is vacuum needed on Boost gauge?

I have recently started in the lengthy process of getting a CTD from stock truck to a super truck. For right now I want to stick with a stock air box. I have a K & N air filter on order and a friend said he would not remove a paper element. Should I maintain paper or go with fiber. I want most flow possible, but best particle blockage. Is there other brands of drop in filters that people have used and had good luck with. Thanks for the help.

P. S. I like the face lift!!

I've been running the amsoil ts-106 in the stock airbox for over 2 years and I am very happy with it.

No egt problems either :)

If you insist on staying with the stock box then you might try AFE brand filters. they apparently have a better sealing surface. Although many have reported that the stock box is the flaw in filtration. If you think you may upgrade to a whole new system at some point, save the money and go for it now. The afe mega cannon looks like a pretty nice setup.

There is no such thing as "most flow possible, but best particle blockage". Actually, I suppose there is such a thing, but it involves a really big filter.

The one thing I took with me from the filtration presentation at the TDR rally in Columbus a few years back (not the last one) is to stick to air filters that do the job. I'm convinced the factory filter does the job.

Both of my trucks are running the factory filter. I might be able to lower EGT's a bit by going with something different on the 2000 truck, but I'm not willing to. It currently has TST injectors and an Edge Comp box. I run the box no higher than 3 for normal towing, and leave it on setting 1 when I'm empty. I suspect that I'm getting about 300 horsepower.

I want hundreds of thousands of trouble-free miles out of these trucks. The least I can do is give them clean air.

My two-cents worth.

Paper Filter

I went with the BHAF from Fleetguard (19037) paper element and flows better than the stock set up. About 80k and so far so good

I agree with Loren and LSmith. This is one area that you need to do a lot of homework. You can do more damage to the life of your engine with the wrong air filtration then almost any other modification. I would stay with the stock until you know what you are installing will give you the protection your engine needs. There was a good article on this in a recent TDR Mag. Don't just go with what everyone is using do the research. Good luck.
