Air filter minders. reliable or not

Is the air filter minder a reliable tool to tell how clogged the air filter is? If not how do you tell when to change the air filter?

Mine is as 03, and there was a defective filterminder that was later recalled. I can pull mine into the red on a new BHAF without sticking my foot in it. Best bet is to just check your filter visually. Mine I don't trust. It just plugs the hole in the pipe.

on my 02 the filter looks clogged, you can't even see light through it but the filterminder don't move off of green.

It never worked on my 2001 and I don't expect it to work on my 2005. This is another device that sounds good but just doesn't live up to expectations. I just change mine once a year (no off road or dusty conditions) or if I want to check it I just take it out and hold it up to the sun like I've been doing for many years...
