i just finished removing the housing from my air filter. in hopes to get less restriction. i used some bailing wire to fasten the filter to the intake tube. that worked good, its tight on there. But i have one question.

since i removed the housing, how likly is it that the filter will get anymore wet from rain water??? and will the water damage the stock filter??? or even possibly the motor, from the moister???

i am about to order the ASA intake set up, so i shouldnt have it this way 4 very long. just a few concerns i had.

With a 93 (no bolt through the filter, for those unfamiliar with the significance), I'd ditch the baling wire and put the stock air box back on, esp since you have an upgrade coming soon.

I cut a bigger hole in my air filter box, and noticed a drop in EGT, so flow through a stock box is a bottleneck to say the least. I am thinking and planning a soop of sorts to put just behind and below the bumper to force air into the filter box. I plan to get an Outerwears cover for my AFE filter in the near future. Of course, when I owned my 91, intercooling it was "in the near future," too.

JG,

I ran the exact rig you are describing for over a year. I wasn't even high class enough to use wire. Mine was held in place with orange nylon cord. Never had a problem with water. Since I have been running my AFE filter, none either.

And the outer pre-filter on the AFE, I sometimes take it off and spray it down with starting fluid from the inside out. It's enough to get any greasy dust off and dries very quickly.

If you get a paper filter soaked with water it will choke air flow. But when it dries it will be fine again. You're probably not going to get the filter soaked under the hood anyway.

Does all the opening up of air filter really help anything? I went back to stock from ASA cause I did not like the noise. I still achieve same 30lbs. boost, and the truck is whisper quiet(compared to ASA).

I run mine as Forrest desribed and it helped reduce some black smoke so therefore I feel it helped. No water problems either.

Personally I like the turbo whine... it certainly is an attention getter.

Ever see a deer ahead on the road? A slight tap on the pedal to get the turbo noise to increase and the deer takes off.

Yes... that's the reason I like the noise... yes that's it exactly. ;)

YOU need to shield it from the heat off of the engine. If you are getting any heat from under the hood you need to fix that.

if you look at the picture phil put up you can see that there is a pretty large collar from the origional intake tube. and being as far from the motor as it is and stuffed in the corner it really dosent get much heat over there. thes sheilded from heat probly just as much as the aftermarket intakes that come with the half box. i understand where your coming from though.
