Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Air filter question

We recently started to bomb my wifes truck and the next step is the air filter. Right now it is stock and we are going to be doing some pretty major pulling soon so it has to go. My question is - we live on a dirt road (not real dusty but can get pretty bad) and I like the Scotty air II system. Has anyone had any problems with the Scotty not filtering well enough or is there a system out there that will reduce EGT's as much as the Scotty and filter better?

I love my Scotty II system. Unfortunately, I haven't got any gauges installed yet so I can't give you an exact figure on EGT drop. It does have any excellent sound and after studying most all of the air intake systems, I decided that it was the most efficiently designed. It's obvious that it really does funnel the air to the turbo rather than the turbo having to "suck" the air by creating a vacuum.



I would buy again in a heartbeat. It flows more air than an AFE and it's about half the price of the new systems.



BTW, how do you like the AirDog? Did you install it yourself? If so, how was the install? I've got one but am waiting for warmer weather before I install it.

AirDog is great have had it now for about 3-4000 miles and not a single glitch. The install was not a big deal, pery basic and good instructions. I ran my wifes through the stock fuel filter with the bigger banjo bolts and have NEVER seen it get below 16 psi.

Sorry... I saw this post and had to comment on the above... How sweet is that! To have a wife who first owns a CTD and then wants to bomb it? WOW!! My wife thinks my truck is just loud, stinky and dirty (I guess she is right).



Anyways...



I would not use anything that uses the stock filter elements as they are prone to leak dirt past the rubber seal if you are pulling in a lot of air. With that said I do not know if the Scotty system has this licked or not. I went with a aFe and as you pointed out it is costly. I am probably going to move to a BHAF now. My silicone number in my oil analysis is always super low (last one was 2) but I am just nervous about re-oiling the thing and think I would rather just have a throw away paper filter.



When I talked to aFe about their intake they told me they sell a lot of their progaurd 7 filters and outerwears nylon boots to construction and gravel pit companies as they claim it is the best defense against dust.



Either way you go at least get an outwears filter. It is like a big nylon sock that covers the filter and provides some extra protection.



I know it is costly but if you are ok with oiling the aFe's then I would go with an aFe intake and progaurd 7 filter. Yes, it costs a bunch but my oil analysis proves it does a fantastic job.

Phil good point on the Outwears but being a racer (and using MANY) I know that Outwears will make one to fit ANY filter. Send them your measurments and they make it and ususally it isnt to expensive $30-40 for a prefilter that will last forever. I was goning to have Outerwears make one that will fit very snug around the UNI filter that comes with the scotty.
