I had my truck seviced & they recommended changing the air filter (stock). I replaced it myself 11K ago & the sensor on the air filter was still showing

100 %.

I did check myself again when I got home & while the bottom was dirty... the top was still perfectly white. I did put a new one in ( just because I had one ) but am wondering if this isn't overkill??? I remember changing the car air filters around 30K...

Any thoughts on the matter most welcome.

I do my own oil and filter changes but the times on the road I have used service centers I have yet to have a svc mgr not advise me that my air filter needs changing. I've put in a new filter and had them advise me to change it. I don't blame them, they are either inexperieced or are abiding by the company line to push sales. It's a relatively benign offense in any event, not outright fraud (like unecessary brake jobs). Air filters on turbo diesels don't take long to get dirty on upstream side. Genos sells 4/2/1 filter kits that are based on historical use from all of their customers. The "one" is the air filter. This would typcially be 20,000 miles (5k oil, 10k fuel). On my truck, current use, I have no problem with 20k on the air filter. Towing more, or dusty environment, I'd shorten the interval . I'll change it once year on lower mileage. Bottom line, it's very easy to change and its relatively cheap compared to the benefit. The more often the better if it suits you. The filter indicator is not a good benchmark, your performance (mileage) will subtlely deteriorate long before you see that move.

Your engine needs 3 times the air than your care does. The bottom of the filter is what gets dirty. always go by the looks on bottom. Also you can hold it to a light if it is bad you will not see any light. THAT is to late always change it when you can see the light in half the light
