Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Air filter question

I have a 2001 HO 6 speed with 8600 miles on it. I have checked the air filter minder several times and this guage still reads 0 percent restriction. I would have thought by now the gauage would have at least shown a minor restriction. I have taken the air filter out and by the looks of it it is sealing around the edges. The air filter has some minor dirt in it but not bad. This is a stock air filter. I was just wondering how long a stock filter normally lasts.

I have a 99 with a ton of the mileage from off road use, towing and towing offroad. (36 months and 26K miles now) My filter minder never moved. Just this month I did my fuel filter , the last of the filters in my Genos' kit, except for the air filter. since I'll be ordering another Geno's kit I figured I might as well change the airfilter.



When I took it out, the Green foam prefilter was black as if it was made that way and the dust was starting to seal off the pleats on the side of the pleated filter. And the green prefilter was starting to seperate from the pleated filter. So I figure what the heck. Out with the old and in with the new. I didnt like the fact that the prefilter was starting to seperate.



So I would suggest to check the condition of your filter besides watching the airminder. The airminder is great for towing..... if the filter becomes too restrictive before you think it's time to change it... at the moment the engine tried to suck a bunch of air but came up against a restrictive filter... the airminder "logs" the event.

I have 22,000 miles on my 2001 and the filter minder hasn't moved either. I pulled it out of the air-filter case and sucked on it to make sure it moves and holds (it does). I think I'll change my filter anyway... it makes me nervous.

My first filter went over 50K before it sucked the minder down. Mostly highway, little bit of gravel.

It's counter productive to open the filter box to check your filter, trust your filter minder. Besides not being able to tell if a filter is clogged just by looking at it there is a strong likelihood that the gasket won't seal the second time round. Only open the box if you intend to change the filter. Unless you are modified or tow it's likely the minder won't move for 100k. If you want to verify that your minder works just put you hand over the box inlet while idling.

Just make sure someone is around to shut down the engine in case your hand gets stuck.
