I have the afe megaconnon w/proguard 7 installed and after about only 50 miles of driving it shows close to 25% on the reminder. With the stock filter it takes several thousand miles to get that reading. with these numbers it seems the afe is more of a resriction. What gives?

O that 25% reading is bad, better pull over and burp the air buildup out of the muffler bearings.

Just kidding, don't wory about the air minder reading low, there are alot of bad ones out their... Kind of like a dum dumb light only take the reading for what it is worth... .

Mine read 60% low ithe the stock air box untill i drilled out a 5" hole in the bottom of my air bok now it reads around 5%

also note i am running an edge on setting 3.

What year truck do you have? If it's an early '03, you've got the wrong filter minder in it. There's a TSB for it... need to replace it with a model with a stronger spring. I believe this is a free "upgrade", but only if you've got an early '03 (I'd say built prior to Feb '03).

Its an 04 ca so. I can understand if it was calibrated wrong but as with most measuring devices no 2 read exactly the same but using the same filter reminder on 2 different filters you can get a fairly good comparison of the 2. Anyone else encounter this?

Since owning my 03, the reminder has never even moved! I am beginning to think it doesn't work! It stays full open all the time.

I have a rather free flowing intake system too, and I'm wondering if the filter minder is getting sucked in from the velocity of the now free flowing air in the system... .

My filter minder is mounted directly in the intake tube now which is one piece...

It would seem to me higher readings on the filter minder = greater air filter resistance. Maybe the AFE isn't all it's cracked up to be?

Another thought, with the way the AFE filter necks down to the tube and the minder is right there, there is a venturi effect causing the minder to suck down. It could be the element is less restrictive than stock, but the shape of it has side effects.

filter minder

what is the number of the tsb for the minder. my dealer says he can find on it. i have an early 03. the day i brought it home it read 65 used

Vaughn,I believe your correct about the venturi effect. I reinstalle d my afe yesterday and upon looking at it you made sense. Where the reminder is located in the air box there is a lot of area it has to measure where as when its mounted in the tube the air flow is choked down just like a venturi in a carb. Good call!!!!I did test the egt going to and from work. With no load same incline, speed, temp the readings are the same. Maybe it may drop under load. Oh well... .

Not a 100% sure there is a TSB on filter minder. I had mine replaced in Dec/03 with new one, part number (53032749AB). DC replaced "no charge" and used the term (cause) on invoice as being "blocked". Maybe a fancy way of saying weak "spring". My truck was manufactured 11/02. Also replaced stock air filter at 12,000 miles along with new minder. Shows no restriction to date.

i picked up a low pressure vacuum gauge [0-60" h20 vacuum] that i will plumb into where the restriction gauge goes and will every so often hook it up in the cab to see what the vacuum the turbo/engine is drawing at full load [or as close as i can simulate with no load] and when i start seeing 20"-30" h2o vacuum i will start thinking about changing that filter out.

My minder was replaced and it never moves with the aFe Pro 7 Magnum Force set up I have. The minder used to read 30% all the time from day 1 even with the stock filter.
