I've seen a lot of options for air filters, done lots and lots of searching with no conclusions, so... I'm going to ask.

What's the best or most common air filter setup. I like the BHAF idea, but I'm worried about water and such contaminating the filter so I'd like to run a sheild setup similar to the AFE. Can I run the AFE type shield and the BHAF or will that not work, or would it be useless anyway? Also seen wraps for the BHAF, where do you get those?

I've seen several of the AFE setups on freeBay for under $200, are they not legit or is the filter included with them not up to par or what?

What's my best option here guys??

Who's running what?

Got pics?

There are a LOT of choices out there. I run a BHAF with a Larry B. heat shield and an Outerwears water resistant cover. I feel this gives the best proven filtration and plenty of air for all but the most bombed trucks. It also costs less than $80 total. Some of the oiled gauze and foam filters have either poor or questionable filtering ability. Some have left oil on the air mass sensor on the 24v motors and caused codes to show or poor engine performance. Their is plenty of discussion whether these filters were oiled properly or over oiled. As far as cool air, there is also plenty to read, but the long and short of it is that more air will drop EGTs and once the vehicle is moving, the underhood temp. is the same as the outside air temp. I looked at the AFE Stage 2 with the ProGuard 7 filter, and it is VERY cool to look at, but IMO, the BHAF would filter at least as well, move all the air I needed, AND save me over $400. Also, the BHAF is probably going to last at least 25,000 miles under the conditions I drive. Can I say " no brainer"? Again, this is just my opinion, and everybody has one. Good luck. Jim

Re: Bhaf

JIm I ran the bhaf in my 98 24v and I changed it at 50k with no problems at all. Always had goodoil samples and that was with 292k on the truck

I'm using the AFE ProGuard 7 drop-in filter. I am pleased with it so far. I've had it about 1. 5yrs. Nothing on fins of turbo yet. I haven't had any samples done so I can't get that technical.

I'm running the Napa 2790 BHAF with no heatshield or anything. Works great-- dropped 200° peak EGT and best of all, is a dry paper element.

Here in WY, moisture isn't much of a concern.

BHAF. Have them in my 1st and 2nd gen with no moisture issues at all. Also filters the fine dust we have here in the summer. Very happy with them.

K&N RE-0880 Here also, I've had it for about 6 months, no problems at all. the filter is about $50 and for about $20 you can get the foam prefilter.

BHAF with LarryB's heat shield and TAG to quieten it down (turbo whine and whistle gets old when you're pulling a 5th wheel for 10-12 hours a day on a long trip).

From 10/28 post by RustyJC == "BHAF with LarryB's heat shield and TAG to quieten it down "

What is TAG and how does it work?

I ran a BHAF for a few weeks, then went back to stock, mostly because of the xtra noise.

BHAF here, no outerwears or heat shields. We just went through the biggest part of our rainy season and I took the truck through tons of mud and water. The filter is still dry. As far as heat goes, when you start moving air temp under the hood is same as outside. And I like the noise it makes!!!

TAG = Turbo Air Guide. It's a honeycomb flow straightener that fits at the turbo inlet. It cut probably 70%-80% of the turbo whistle and whine as compared to the BHAF without the TAG.
