Warning Rip Off

Can anyone tell me the pro's and con's of the different air filter systems and which one works better? I'm looking at the K&N system FIPK 57-1525 and the AFE Magnum Force funnel ram system. I'm trying to decide which will work better and which will filter the best. I am aware of the AFE Pro Guard but I'm not fond of spending over $100 for just the filter. Thanks for any information and opinions

I don't want to start an air-filter war, but if you are considering a K&N system you might want to try the following.

Take the K&N filter (New one) and hold it up to the lights or sky and look through it. You will see lots of little pin holes. With that said, you will get lots of dust through those pin holes.

I don't know much about your other choices so I can't make any comments one way or the other. I use the filter normally called the BHAF and get it from Fleetguard. The part # eludes me at the moment.

I would nix the K&N.

Good luck on your choice. ;)

I got a K&N drop in, used it 4K miles. I checked it, the air tube from the box to the turbo and finns would not pass the white glove test. I returned it for a full refund & went back to stock for now, but looking at BHAF's

If you are worried about dirt, I wouldn't go with anything but a Progaurd 7 or you could go with a Normal AFE system and add a Filter sock. You get double protection and less intervals of filter cleaning.

I run the proguard 7... . Awesome, EGT's down by 150° from SCOTTY II, and spoolup is alot quicker! Just thought that may help ya out!

chris,

that makes no sense. the pg7 flows LESS and is NOT fully isolated from sucking WARMER engine compartment air. the scotty 2 should have lower or equal egts as it flows MORE and sucks COOLER ambient air from outside the eng compartment.

please clafify

I have a Scotty 3 with an AFE filter in it (not the Progaurd 7), and just got back from a hunting trip a few of the roads were 2-4 inches deep of really fine dust.

I tried to clean the filter out the best I could before the trip home. While doing so I noticed on the inside surfaces of the filter and snorkle that I could not find any dust what-so-ever. The engine and the outside of the filter were caked in dirt/dust.

Easy to explain... Watch the gauges. The Scotty II would flow 100-200° higher temps when towing as well... I usually ran without the SCOTTY II cowl on there, as the EGT's were killing me. This new Proguard 7 has quite a bit of differences, and I have seen better mileage and spoolup as well... I would be glad to take you for a flight if you ever make it down to Texas. I cannot get too crazy, as I tow big nasty loaded down cow wagons on a regular basis, so too much fuel is just as bad as not enough... can't go anywhere! If there is anything else that needs explaining, let me know!

I also took the K&N out of mine. Too much dirt.

As I understand it, unless you are running over 350 HP, just keep your stock filter and box. (However, I did drill 1" holes in the bottom of the box to increase the amount of air. )

Steve

Drilling holes in the bottom of the filter box will do nothing but get you higher EGT's, been there done that, ended up costing me to buy a used filter box and snorkel from a service shop. I also tried the BHAF and got the same results, higher EGT's, so I switched back to the stock box with the snorkel sucking cool outside air, which is the only thing I have found to reduce EGT's. I am looking into fabricating a houseing for the BHAF to suck outside air as I beleave this is the only truely way to reduce EGT's. You have to get cool outside air into the system not hot under hood air to reduce EGT's.

A better flowing air filter than stock box and filter will aid in faster spoolup or and high Hp (400 + Hp) applications to reduce EGT's but for the average guy makeing a little over stock Hp sucking underhood hot air will not help him in reduceing EGT's.

So, is this why I have never seen EGT's over 1100 with my stock air box and E-Z while towing.

I suspect the primary reason you never see EGT's over 1100 is that you installed the boost elbow that came with the EZ (or, if you have an HY35, you turnbuckled the wastegate). In other words, the biggest factor in dropping the EGT's with the EZ is the additional air mass flow obtained with the higher boost. With my truck (see signature) equipped as shown except for the DD2's (i. e. , with the stock HO injectors), I never got over 1100 degF pre-turbo EGT either, even when towing our 13,500 lb 5th wheel (21,180 lbs GCW versus 21,500 lbs GCWR) during the summer in the Texas Hill Country. Stock, it would hit 1300 degF towing.

Charlan,

Good information about the Pro-Guard 7, but I have another question for you. When you ran the ScottyII, were you using the 4. 5 inch cowl hole or just the fender inlet to feed it? Thanks.

BHAF stands for "Big Honkin Air Filter" and it has a Cummins Part # of AH19004 for non-Marine Applications and AH19037 for Marine applied Cummins B & C engines. Deminsions are as follows. Overall Height: 11. 88 in, Largest Housing OD: 10. 50 in, End Connection Height: 1. 38, and End Connection ID: 4. 00 in.

This information comes from page 814 of the Product Guide in the Fleetguard 2001 , Book 1 Guide.

The only difference between the two filters, is that the Marine version has a reinforcing screen on the inside as well as the outside and cost about 3 times as much as the non-Marine version.

They are available from Cummins/Fleetguard and through NAPA Auto Parts. Most big-rig truck shops probably have them in stock.

Marine version is around $100 plus

Non Marine version runs anywhere from $40 up to the $50 range.

Hope this helps;)

fleetguard claims the marine version flows HIGHER at around 900 cfm as opposed to the "standard" version which flows in the 600 ish range.

i got a "at-best SIDEWAYS" response from fleetguard that the marine version flowed more = i lost confidence in what they were saying

mungyver was right on - the marine version runs around $130 making it a very UNeconomical choice when you have to change the filter out.

i went with the scotty III - i'll be watching the monsterous afe filter in the scotty to see if it works as well as most say

if you live on gravel/dusty roads, i would recommend BHAF - i had BHAF on my 03 until i swapped it out with the scotty3
