Here I am

Air filter vendors ... how about some airflow values

Thanks, TDR Staff

So let's hear about Stanadyne

Starter Contact Update Kit

Looks like a high flow airfilter/intake is in my future ...

how do the different filters flow ...

let's use the stock filter and a bhaf for a baseline ...

i have never see cfm ratings anywhere, and thanks to GO 4LO's informative post on turbo ratings i am interested to see how some of the more common air filters stack up ...

i installed my filterminder in my bhaf, so as soon as my turbo gets here i'll be able to tell how under filtered i am

any info would be appreciated

nope ... i just drilled an 11/16 hole in the top of the filter

the hard part is that you have to trim the rubber grommet on the filter minder ...

the filter is almost 1/2" thick rubber

it took a new razor knife and a lot of patience to open the grommet up ... i've been looking for a grommet that'll fit and haven't found one yet

i was gonna wait to post until i could list a part number 'cause it's easy to screw up the factory grommet

I know someone here has posted some of the CFM info on some of the filters.

The RE-0880 is rated at 1400 cfm at 10" water column and the Fleetguard AH19037 is rated at 687 cfm, BUT that's at 6" water column.

There was list in one of the TDR mags also. Don't recall which issue.

I was at AFE for our dyno day and the AFE flowed twice as much air as the BHAF at the same water column, If I remember correctly the AFE was around 650cfm and the BHAF was around 300cfm at the same water column. There was a member there that challenged that his BHAF flowed as much as the AFE, so the company owner showed us on there testing machine ( not sure what is called) but anyway the AFE even flowed more air than a open 4" inlet. The member that challenged was given a brand new AFE filter for free for his big loss in the challenge. Maybe someone else that was there will post the exact numbers but there was a big difference. Later.

The RE-0880 is a K&N cone style filter that could be used alone or with the pshcotty air intake system for example. Another excellent filter.

MORE to the point. *I* would like to see what real-world maximum airflow is actually NEEDED by the stock turbo on our trucks with pretty common mods like a Comp and injectors - THEN, rather than focus ONLY on filter airflow, also include efficiency at filtering out standard dust particles...

We can toss around supposed or claimed airflow numbers all day long - but if we don't know what we actually NEED, or the efficiency rating of various filters, we're still pretty much in the dark as to making an intelligent selection...
