Currently have 11,400 on the truck and today I changed the air filter. I noticed this dirty oily mess on the filter and was wondering if this is the norm or not? I know the emission junk effects alot of things but should it or could cause the mess on the filter?
Leave it in until the restriction indicator tells you to change it. Filters become more effective as they collect dirt. By changing early, you're just throwing away money.

True. Has your filter minder even moved yet? You may be surprised how far you can go. Also, not a bad idea to test the filter minder. I had one that would suck in with vacuum, but go back to "like new", leaving one to believe there was no restriction.
I know the filters get a little better with dirt on them, just drives me nuts knowing it is that dirty. I was very particular with my 2nd gen, no reason to change now.
