I just read an interesting post in the 2nd-gen forum about air filters. I am currently running the paper one that was in my truck when I bought it (it's in need of a change though. I was going to go with a K&N but after reading the post in the 2nd gen forum I'm starting to think different. So... what is everyone running?

Terry,

I'm running the K&N but like some of the others have been thinking of going back to the stock filter. Last couple of times I looked at the turbo inlet there was some oil buildup on the blades. Haven't cleaned and oiled for awhile, need to check again to see if maybe I was over oiling.

I'm running a K&N. I just cleaned it after 50,000 miles. I would recommend cleaning around 12,500 miles due to the condition of mine. I even gained 3 psi when it was cleaned! :D

K&N All the way...

The K&N was in the 89 for about 200,000 Km with regular servicing every 40,000 or so. Never saw the buildup on the turbo blades as stated by others. Now in the 93, and it has saved me money if anything else. Where I get filters, the paper is about $30 and the K&N was $90. I serviced it (K&N) about 6 or so times instead of new paper. I have heard of some guys in the gravel areas having more problems, but your paper element filter would plug just as easily, dust is dust... .

K&N Replacement Canister

I'm a K&N guy! :)

I don't think it's a fair comparison to evaluate the First gen Large Canister-style K&N replacement filter against the compromised "flat" somewhat troublesome sealing K&N of the Second Gens.

As with many things on the First Gens... . our intake system & filter set up is MUCH Better!

I just don't worry about the K&N canister filter the same way I would if it was the "Flat" filter.

KEENO :D

3# is a lot Matt. That sucker must have been pretty dirty!:)

Guess I had better check mine - it's been awhile.

I don't know where you get filters, but my last one ran $18. 50 from the local Cummins dealer. That's with no special discount or anything. That makes it a little more tolerable and I just have a little more piece of mind. :D

I think that I might have been the one that started that thread. My only experience with the k&n was in a first gen truck. I kept it well oiled but not enough to get any in the intake. The thing never filtered as well as the paper one. Only very fine dust got through, but that is what wears out the rings. If you get a chance look at a k&n and look at the thickness of the gause filter media. It is very thin and it is easy to see why it doesn't filter as well. I have had people tell me that there are better oil type filters with thicker media but I can't remember the names right now. I definetly don't recomend the k&n.

Where's Fleetguard in the poll? I'll vote Mopar since it's most likely a Fleet. I always ran either, never saw any buildup on the turbo or in the plumbing. I think I would freak if I did! I saw a purolator once at Pepboys and looked at it for kicks, seemed well built. K&N's are for race cars!

I have used the k&n air filter and have noticed 1-2# increase in boost with it over paper filter. I would like to continue to use it but have concerns about oil & dirt getting into turbo & intercooler. I wonder if amsoil filter has same concerns.

KEENO, and anyone else,

Check the Product/Accessies Forum for the Big Honking Air Filter thread! It's the canister type, but huge. They dumped the flat housing and are clamping these things naked to the intake.

Please everyone go, read! See what Deezul 1 and Terry H are talking about!

Thanks,

DBuzz

I have the Amsiol in both my trucks. Have had no problems. They are a foam element that requires sticky oil. the foam is about 1" thick. No dirt around my blades or housing.
