I have been doing some research on the debate on which filter is better. I happened to find that the 2 gen have the same problem with fine dusting in the tube when using the K&N. Then someone suggested that AFE filters have a better filteration then the K&N, no more fine dusting.

I cannot find the post again to link it here :(

This is reports using the AFE 50-1007 kit, and the replacement 60-90037 filter. It was said that it flows good enough to support the mild 2nd gens, but not the extremes. I also seen this filter metioned AFE 20-91002 but have not found this number anywhere. But AFE offers a wide variety of universal filters in lots of sizes.

Has anyone used any of these? or tried to use them?

I also havent heard much about the company AFE?

I am interested in possible custom mods to put it on my truck. I would much use the reuseable, and maintain it, then use the BHAF or MHAF and replace yearly. Maintainece is just trying to stay in good relations with the truck after the torture I put it through. Happy to spend time doing it.

BTW sorry spell check isnt workin

Here we go again - another air filter battle!Oo. Oo. Oo.

Here is my . 02 worth. I have used a K&N air filter for over 140,000 mile - NO dust in the intake hose and all oil analysis for the every oil change has shown NO contimination. I change my oil every 6000 miles and clean my K&N every other oil change.

I first installed my K&N sometime in 1994 and drove my truck that way - no problems. A couple of years ago I "swiss Cheesed my air box - again no problems. Just last year I installed my K&N behind Old Smokeys BHAF mount. I have not run an oil analysis on that as yet but I do not expect any changes in my oil analysis. :D :D

I have an AFE I got from PDR and was told by Piers himself that he prefered the Afe because the fins were bigger and therefore gave more surface area to allow more air flow. jm2cw :) bill

I too run a K&N and after reading posts about them got to checking air box and tube etc. Never have found any dust etc. Clean it once a year or so and turn it in box every 6 monts or so. Filters with some dirt on them etc. filter better then fresh filters of any sort.

No Battle

I was just looking for another option in the reuseable air filter department, did not want to stir the pot up for a :-{} .

I just understand that there has been some question on the quailty of the k&n and its ability to filter. The paper is good but I prefer a reuseable. I respect on others findings on the K&n and more then likely will buy one if the AFE wont work.

Smoky not sure if you are asking me or not, but the P/n are listed in my first post, they appear to attach just like the other filters metioned. This is a bad pic but this is what I am talking about, I think that just the filter could be used. THis is the whole kit p/n. #ad

I have PM BCadwell to find out that info from him, on p/n and mount on the filter he is using.

Would you like me to send you an adapter like the one I built to adapt a K&N to your mount? I've got some 4" skd 80 plastic pipe left for the air filter outlet and the rest you can get locally. It has a good tight seal and you can only see a little of it from the outside. Just let me know.

Hey jlast , I got a K&N I would give you if you weren't so far away . I would have to warn you though that you will see dust in your air intake tube every three thousand miles when you change your oil . Well at least thats when I change my oil and I started checking my air intake tube after I seen other people on the forms started noticing that they were getting dust in thier air intake tubes !!!!!!!!!!!!

jlast,

Sorry, I wasn't clear. You listed two filter part numbers. I was wondering how each of them would attach to the intake hose. It is kind of hard to tell by just looking at the picture how the filter is attached to the bracket, and what would need to be done to it to make it work. It would be nice if it had a neck like the BHAF, so it would be easy to install.

Bob,

Are you going to make it to the Idaho BOMB party? If so, I could take a look at your setup there. I don't know if I am going to make the change. Right now I am just looking for information. Thanks.

Mckenzie TY for the link, been on that webpage for awhile, good stuff and another option.

Old smokey

I too am in the very early planning stages of the air filter idea, I posted this topic and what information I had at the time just to stir up everyones creative ideas, and to see what feed back I would get.

This is the best pics and flow info I have found so far, and I am still double checking the P/n. Please click on the pics at this website they blow up to give a very large image. It appears to have a flange, you can see a hose clamp in the top pic.

I have also just thought about asking a 2nd gen with this kit to go out and give some measurements and pics of mounting?

Jlast

Could you just make up a mount kinda like old smokey's BHAF mount and weld in a tube just like they do for the "AFE maga cannon" atach the filter to one side of the welded on tube and your intake tube for the truck to the other. Does anyone have a part # for just a filter not the hole kit??

aFe's website has some good info. They have some universal filters that come in a variety of sizes, and pictures of them with dimensions. They say these filters are only for applications such as racing, though. I couldn’t find the dimensions of the filters used for the different "highway" applications. But I haven't looked too hard. It looks like the filters are between $61 and $95.

I saw in one of the issues of TDR that there is a pre filter available for the aFe filters. I will have to look to see who makes them and what filters they make them for.

I don’t think it would be too hard to modify one of my mounts to make a different filter work. I know of at least two people using the factory style K&N with it. I guess it just depends on how creative you want to get.

Just when you thought the discussion had cooled off

I run two diffrent filters. One on 93 with a swiss cheese air box and a K+N replacement and a 91 with a BHAF and a K+N industrial replacement filter. The 93 is a radial seal and I have yet to find any dusting. I do however take some air box grease and put a small ammount around the sealing area. Too many years working for Caterpillar!! The 91 is equipped with an industrial replacement that has a flange just like the paper filter that Ol, Smokey recomends. With this system I've never found any dust either and this truck gets to see a lot of dust. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that I don't think there is anything wrong with the K+N if you treat them right.

Dingo

I treated my K&N right , I put it in a box and put in storage and put a Old Smoky BHAF Mount and a BHAF with a Outerwears prefilter on my truck and I haven't seen any dust in the air intake tube since . My K&N was not that old and I was getting dust in the tube . I put a 93 air filter box on my 92 ( before I got the Old Smoky mount ) and ran a Fleetgaurd paper filter in the 93 box and I didnt get any dust in the tube with that set-up and I didnt put any grease on the sealing area either. Hummmm I wonder whats wrong with that K&N ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ who cares .
