I went down the valley today and started thinking about air filters and fuel economy. The highway was flat so I decided to try a little experiment. I have 17,900 miles on my truck and still have the original air filter. The dealer has tried to change it the last two oil changes, but it really does not look that bad. So since it was cool and the air still, and no traffic, I figured couldn't hurt too much. So I pulled the air filter out and ran 10 miles with the cruise set at 79 mph, reset the overhead once up to speed and got 17. 4 mpg.

Stopped after 10 miles, did not shut it off and put the element back in. Same ten miles on cruise and got 17. 4 mpg.

Now that is running empty so it probably is not pulling huge volumes of air, but I thought it was kind of interesting. I would have guessed that it should have been a little higher with no restriction.
