Anyone noticed a reduction in smoke when switching to the BHAF or AFE?

Right now I'm running the stock airbox with the fender snorkel removed and don't have any EGT concerns to speak of but I've got to figure out a way to get the smoke down at least for annual smog testing. I'd prolly prefer to go the BHAF route IF it would flow enough additional air to make a difference in smoke. I know the AFE flows more air but I'm not crazy about oiled filters and I don't need more noise.

Again, I'm looking at something to get the smoke level down not so much reduce EGT (although that can't hurt).

You will also get more whistle with a BHAF. It does'nt bother me but it does have more WOT noise and quite a wistle on a hard pull. I don't think it will help with smoke much if you are talking about low RPM takeoff smoke as it is just caused be the turbo lag. It will help on higher rpm airflow though.

I just passed the smog test yesterday (1st time I had to do it), when I say I just passed I mean I JUST passed. The way they do it here is they put you on a dyno and have you bring the truck up to 40mph. There's hardly any load on the engine, I was only making about 1. 5 or 2lbs of boost.

I wonder if I should've locked the TC and kept it out of OD during the test run. My original thought was to keep as little of load as possible on the engine as to not get that puff of smoke that happens when it goes into lockup.

Now I'm wondering if the turnbuckle mod would be beneficial for a smog test? Guess I'll have to read more about the turnbuckle mod, I'm wondering what the downside of it is.....
