I am looking for air filter recommendations. Some of the filters I am looking at are: K&N, AMSOIL and XLerator. I have used K&N filters in other vehicles but for the Cummins I am more concerned with filtration ability than air flow. I have also had problems with the fit on K&N filters in other vehicles. The AMSOIL and XLerator look to be the same design. Is there any advantage to one over the other?

I have both an Amsoil and a K&N filter for my truck. Here are my opinions/observations about both...

K&N: Least restrictive, flows good when dirty, harder to get a good seal, pain in the butt to clean (stuff builds up in the bottom of the pleats), easier to re-oil.

Amsoil: A bit more restrictive, tight seal around air box lid, easier to clean, messy to re-oil. I haven't had it in long enough to see how well it flows when dirty.

I am going to go with the "Scotty" system because I don't think I'm getting enough air through the stock airbox. If I kept my engine stock I would probably stick with the Amsoil because its easier to clean, it seals tight around the lid, and I don't have to mess with any sealing grease.

Official Disclaimer: This is just MY humble opinion.

I have had the Xcelerator filter for 5 years now. Am happy with it. Seals good around the air box lid. Going to try the "Scotty Air System" too.

I have the "AMSOIL" ail filter, have been checking the turbo tube and no oil or dirt have been present since installation. Seems to seal good in the box. Dont know about flow of air compared to "K & N" but AMSOIL seems to be OK so far.
Go for it, either one will do a bettter job than stock paper filter.

I paid 58. 95 for the RE-0880. Be prepared to pay shipping too since they won't have it in stock.

In my opinion the Amsoil filter is the way to go, but that is the partiality talking because I am a dealer. From all of the test results that I have read the Amsoil flows much more clean air, even dirty, than any other filter out there. I can't say about cleaning and reoiling them sense I don't do either I just buy a new filter. If you do choose to reoil them, or any filter, make sure that you put the oil in spray bottle and apply it that way. Probably not as much of a mess.

Scott1 is revising the "Scotty" air system and the "new and improved" version is supposed to be ready soon, if I read his posts correctly. I get the impression that it will include some of the mods to provide additional outside (read cool) air flow to the filter, the proper filter sock, etc. Read the posts on subject "Scotty Air System Tip" from 10/18/99.

You can buy the RE-0880 from Diesel Injection Service in Lubbock, TX for $44. 62 but they don't stock it so it's a factory direct item - however, if you order more than $200. 00 of product from them they pick up the freight - pretty easy if you order a Prime-Loc kit for 159. 95 or a couple of cases of Stanadyne Perf Form @ $47. 64/case

Thats right Rob... SCOTTY AIR II is nearing completion. Actually it will be a SCOTTY AIR II and a SCOTTY AIR PLUS. The 'PLUS' version is for the folks that want to go that extra length to get MORE AIR. It won't take your savings and will not require you to mortgage the house again.

Some more testing and tinkering to do.
