I just bought for my 2001 a new air filter (Mopar) from the dealer.

I noticed on this one there is no thin piece of foam on the bottom. The parts guy checked all the way back to 99 and said this is the part and that the part number supersedes the original.

Just curious... but what did the foam actually do... ?? Was there really a purpose behind it... ??

I've seen them on other filters as well as the stock ones and figured they were just to keep the big stuff out of contact with the paper element. I may be wayyy off base on that.

If you ever decide to go to an aftermarket filter (K&N, AFe, BHAF) most of them will not have the foam either.

HTH.

the foam was just a prefilter, and i think fleetguard (who makes the mopar filters) has stopped using it. I don't know why but the last few fleetguard filters i have bought didn't have the prefilter.
