Ok, for lack of a better phrase. I have a Westach fuel pressure gauge and went on vacation this week with the family, noticed the fuel pressure gauge was hovering around 7psi @ 75mph. And the engine was surging and would fail to accelerate at times.

I new this was the sign of a failing Lift Pump (7400 miles, 2002). So while down in Knoxville I bought a new pump at the Cummins dealer. Slapped it on when the old one finally got too troublesome to drive. (in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel off 81N). Took about an hour.

When I did a bump start to get the pump to prime the system prior to fully cranking the engine I could hear what sounded like air flowing through the system. But the gauge went up to 15psi and was solid. So back north we headed.

About 100miles up the road I started to get the engine surge again, but pressure stayed constant 11psi@75mph and 15psi at idle.

So could I have air in the injection system?

And if so, how do I get it out?

OR

Is there something else that I am missing here that could be causing the problems?

The surge seems to happen only at speeds above 65mph for a constant timeframe.

Any help would be nice.

Thanks

Jason

Since you're on the road you might try resetting the APPS. Pull the neg cables off batts for a few minutes, reconnect, turn key to on position (don't start), slowly depress accelerator and release. Any thing else would involve sensor replacement and you are in warranty.

check for codes, off ,on off,on off, on with the key dont start the engine. look for codes in the odometer window. could be vp44 injection. let us know if codes are present.

Jason- I'm no expert, but sounds to me like your trouble is not from getting air in the system from your LP change-out. It would have worked itself out after driving those 100 miles. I would guess you have air entering the system somewhere--cracked fuel line, etc.

After a LP change you can bleed the air by loosening the banjo bolt at the VP44 and have someone bump the starter while you watch the fitting for a solid spay or bubbling from air. Tighten it just before the LP shuts off (22-23 seconds from the starter bump. )

I'm sure others will chime in with more/better info. Hope this helps.

Ok, Ran some of the diag codes this morning to see what I have.

Got the following codes

P 0500 This one is Throttle position sensor

P 1693 DTC Detected in ECM or PCM

P 0216 Fuel Injection pump Timing Failure

So I guess it will be off to the dealer Monday to see how well they honor the extended warranty I bought when I got the truck, 74500miles ago.

Could the Injection pump timing failure be because of the TPS sensor failure?

I also took the Edge EZ box off to see if there is any change. Not much. Except the truck has lost all its power!.

I will keep you guys posted. The saga continues.

Well got the truck back from the dealer. They replaced the vp44 injection pump at no cost to me. Was covered under warranty, I have 74K on the truck. Not even a deductable.

Thanks for the assistance
