I read in a prior post about removing the silencer from the plastic inlet tube between the air filter box and turbo. It works. I overhauled mine yesterday. Grind off the end ring on the inlet side as indicated by the arrows. Grind off enough plastic so you can see the seam between the outer tube and the inside baffle. Then tap out the baffle/silencer to remove it from the tube. There is also a plastic ring restriction on the outlet side to the tube once the baffle is removed. I cut this ring out with a jig saw. I can't tell yet if it helped on performance or an increase in turbo noise but at least the air has a clean flow to the turbo.

I did this as well only I wanted to keep the stock piece "just in case" for dealer trips. I went to (insert you favorite home supply store here), I mean autoparts store, and got a piece of 5" tube from a TORO leaf blower accessory. I call this the "TORO" mod. ;) That combined with the silencer mysteriously falling out and now I can hear the turbo sing.

It's still not loud enough though. Time for a BHAF!

inlet mod

I am new to cummins motor, ex stroker, and maxer. Do you actually replace the tube between the air cleaner and turbo or just cut the+out? Also can the piece come off as not to damage the turbo? Last but not least, what's a BHAF? Thanks, and not to sound strupid but a real diesel engine is new to me!

The inlet is just to help quiet the turbo, I removed mine with no adverse effects and WOW, does that turbo whine sound fine. :D  You may want to consider removing the silencer ring from the turbo also! If you want to know more about that then do a search on "silencer ring removal" and it will fill you in. BTW , BHAF stands for big honkin air filter. good luck:)

You can either replace it or cut the "+" out. Some people do one, some do the other. I usually choose to replace stock parts with modified ones that way if the time ever comes I can return it to stock. You could argue that this makes for a big pile of stock parts in the garage though too. Six in one, half dozen in the other.

Try this link for more acronyms than you can SASA. (shake a stick at)

I can take a picture of the TORO mod if anyone wants but it just looks like the stock tube since it's hard black plastic, the only difference is it's just hollow and smooth inside.

Yea, I'd like to see the pic of

that TORO mod, specially the pull starter:D as that sounds like a gud emergency handle to have. Along with the one that says "Remove before Flight" on the ejection seat;) :D !

Da Diesel-less SOTSU!!

PS: was looking at the dealers inventory in Alamosa Co and they have an "added" 2700 for "market adjustment". Gud luck with it, as the dealer inventories are setting due to orders. They mostly had ST's on the lot. Also saw this @ Espanola NM dealer (Zangara - who charges twice for factory installed items, on the stickers) BEWARE

Replaced "waffle tube"

I just replaced my waffle tube with a piece of 5" Chrome stainless Stack off my new Granite dump truck. It looks Sharp!!

I will add a pic soon.

Aloha veryone I remved the silecer ring on the urbo but can hear no difference. I removed the snap ring then the shiny ring. Is that correct?I must be missig something else cause I cant hear any whine. Aloha.

Between removing the silencer ring, and the above mod to the waffle thing, The truck has that familiar "whine" like my 2001 had.

I love hearing turbo whine. Can't wait for the TST box and more whine.
