Air mattress vs futon mattress

Being 51 years old and still seeking adventure, I often take short overnight trips to the beach with my wife. We have a nice 31' travel trailer but its not worth the hassle and prep for a short trip. Also, kinda nice being married to a woman who doesn't mind dressing down to sleep in the truck or dressing up for a night on the town.



Anyway, for a while now on these overnighters we've slept on an inflatable air mattress in the shell of the truck, however the last two outings have been miserable. Undressing inside a sleeping bag while atop of an air mattress is a joke. Having dead batteries in the electric mattress pump is even worse. Needless to say, I began exploring options for replacing the air mattress.



While driving to Pismo Beach for our last outing we saw a sign for a discount mattress store in the City of Pismo Beach. We stopped at the store and spoke to a very knowledgeable salesman who ended up recommending a futon mattress for the bed of the truck. He stated that a full size futon mattress has a width of 52" and because it lacks springs inside it easily moulds around the wheel wells.



All I can say is, what a difference in sleep. Best sleep ever in the camper shell and I don't feel my wife rolling over in the middle of the night. I highly recommend a futon mattress over an air mattress to anyone who is shopping for a truck bed mattress. Oo.

When I wrecked my trailer two years ago, I took the matress out of the bunk bed and use it in my truck the same way. I was really thinking of getting one of those memory foam mattress toppers from Costco to make things a little nicer...

Air mattresses are good inside the house where the temp stays constant. They don't shine when there is temp drop over night. They get soft and uncomfy. Good move with the futon. You also don't have to be so careful to not put a hole in them!
