Anyone had any experience with an air ride suspension? Not just the helper bags. . In the rear it replaces the springs with bags.

I have a friend that took a test drive in a F550 Ford with air ride and he said that it was so smooth. . I was thinking about the air ride for the rear suspension to make the ride real smooth. .

Do a search, I think there was a thread about 6-8 months ago.

The engine weighs about 1200 LB. and your truck wieghs about 6000 lbs. This gives about 3500 lbs. on the front axle. So your minimum design weight needs to be 4000 Lb. or 2000 Lb per bag. Now this is deciving on a 2wd truck since the A-arms give mechanical advantages and also uneven swing.

I had a 1/2 ton ext. cab SB chevy with 4-wheel air on it. Thing rode great. I think it was as good as a Caddy but hey it was my truck. The truck weighed in at 4500 Lbs. With about 2500 Lb. on the front axle. I originally put 2500 Lb. bags on the front. This took about 120-130 PSI to raise the truck to a respectable driving hieght. I had several problems and eventually changed to 2600 Lb. bags. This took 100 PSI of to raise to driving height.

Now the bags are rated for 100 PSI max even though I was over pressuring them (thus the problem) so your truck would need at least 3000+ Lb bags. The 2600 Lb bags are 6. 5" dia. and the 3000 Lb bags are 8" dia. Now the real problem, the coil springs in my truck are 6" dia. with 6-7" clearance between the A-arm and the spring purch tower. So you can see an obvious fit problem!

To talk to the experts go to

Air Ride Technologies and give them a call. If you want to do some research yourself checkout the online catalog. Page 30 gives the capacity and diminsions and page 2 and 3 gives some background to the questions they will ask.

A final note: even with trained professionals (I use this term lightly) you will still need to check your air suspension periodically for wear. Just because they install them every day doesn't mean they are good at it or know all. But these guys are the best. If they can not do it no other shop will be able to. Can you say self built custom with alot of dedication with the sawzall!!!
