What is a scotty air system????

Hello bigmikie, I was having a chat with a Cummins engineer in Indiana when the conversation turned to the poor design and restrictive properties of the factory air box. This guy stressed that these engines need a good supply of air and remarked that in 'real world' applications out there on the road is where you will notice the difference, not on a static test like a dyno. His reasoning was that we are RAMMING into the air that the engine needs when going down the hwy and the easier it is to supply the air the better... especially a cooler source.

So, I got my brain in gear and decided to take out the factory box and try a K&N Cone shape velocity stack style filter... model RE-0680 with an adapter from 3"to 4" and slid that into the turbo inlet hose and clamped it. I noticed two things... 1] slightly louder turbo. 2] Quicker spool up of the turbo. I then got my thermal thermometer and hung the sensor between the filter and turbo and then tried this with the factory air box... I placed the sensor beside the air box and inside the air box. I did city driving, hwy driving and loaded driving. The temps with the Cone filter now known as the Scotty Air where lower at all levels of driving. To enhance this even more I fed the filter with cool air from the fender opening for the factory box and from the front by the right tow hook using metal 3" dryer vent hose. Again an improvement. I also see between 1-2 lbs of boost increase.

Then, another BOMBer [Evan Beck] pointed out a better filter application that I was not aware of.
It is the RE-0880 which does not require the adapter to fit. It simply slips inside the turbo inlet hose and clamps on. Something else that is a benefit... its seals better then the factory box does and I have not seen any dust inside the turbo hose or any 'film' on the turbo fins.

I had concern about getting the filter wet or having it splashed from below... I was constantly getting out and looking under the hood after a big puddle and during driving rain on the hwy... all was/is fine.

Now I have taken it a step further. I have designed a double walled heat shield for the K&N RE-0880 with an awesome air induction system that FEEDS the air into this unit.
I just installed the proto-type yesterday.
So far all testing shows more improvement.
This is called the Psychotty Air and the acid test will be the trip from Calgary to Long Beach.

I should also point out that you will benefit from this even more if you choose to do modifications to the fuel supply... more fuel needs more AIR.

There is still a bit more fine tuning to do but I will try to have a couple of units along with me at Dieselfest. as soon as it appears to be accepted and passes some testing I will make this available at a reasonable price for all my fellow RAMMERS.

yes... ... my wife says the same thing, but you will notice and so will she the performance difference. I havn't installed the Scootty system yet but I did install more fresh air ducting to the airbox and cut 3, 2"X 2" holes in the bottom of the airbox
to feed more air. I left the resonator on and removed the muffler . We just got back from a 1,000 mile trip 500 miles in the mountains pulling a new fifth wheel that is
4,000 lbs heavier. My wife says it seems like it has more power (which it does) the fuel mileage is better which it was (by 2 mpg) she was even happy. We were talking (C. B. ) to a high roller in a motor home powered with a 350 h. p. diesel and we flat left him in the mountains. He was so sure
of himself he stayed in the middle lane, when I blew by him..... he commented you sure are running good..... yeah your wife will most likely be mad... ... diesels they just don't understand.

Got my Pre-filter sock for the K&N RE-0880 the other day. This is a MUST for the Scotty Air system. Its a tapered sock made to fit the filter perfectly. Not a universal pre-wrap.
Its Part # 22-8035PK (custom made just for the RE-0880)
Its a black conical shaped sock with an elastic end that fits snugly around the outlet part of the filter. It has the K&N logo on it too. Looks Great!

The actual filter looks like it will never get dirty with this on it #ad

Thanks HHD, I ordered what I believed to be the correct prefilter but when I checked it out, it was for a shorter, larger diameter filter. I recommend the prefilter cause when I went to play in the dirt, the filter really sucked up a lot of real estate. The prefilter should increase the cleaning intervals of the main filter.

What are you Rammers using to clean the KN?
After I got done rototilling the field I had to reinstall the intercooler connecter hose as well as clean the air filter. I put the filter in a large bucket of warm water with some mild engine degreaser and left it for a couple hours. I removed it and flushed from the inside with low pressure water.

Isn't that intercooler hose bustin' BOOST wonderful! I'm in the market for some high pressure hydraulic clamps to hold those hoses on for those extreme BOOST situations!

So far the way it looks there will be no need for the 'sock' on this new system unless your driving upside down. I'll have it on at Dieselfest.
Double wall heat shield, loads of cold air supplied, less then 30 min to install, spools up even quicker... etc etc

SCOTT
Rammin' pretty good so far with the Psychotty Air... as soon as I run it for awhile I will make them up for my fellow RAMMERS.

Scott1, have you noticed any improvment in boost pressure with the new intake system?

My boost guage only goes to 30. I hooked up my buddies 50 and I was getting 37 before this new Air System. I can tell it gets the boost guage pinned past 30 faster. I'll have to get another 50 guage to see if it did increase the boost or not. I also tightened all my intercooler clamps. . several where loose. I think its good practice to go over all the clamps and hoses on a regular basis, especially after roto-tilling.

I'm with the other guys Scott, I'm ready when the Psychotty is - been holding off 'cause in our e-mail conversations you thought you might not use the RE-0880, but if you're back on that # then I'll get a couple coming -

Holdin' my K&N cleaned breath,

As long as I don't get snowed in on my way down there I will have the proto-type on the truck in Long Beach. I didn't have time to build the final unit... however, they are going to be built while I am on the road. A good friend of mine has helped with this.

Scott1... I was wondering if you have any problems with fine blowing snow getting into the engine compartment and filter. Living up there in the land to the north in sure you have this white crap up there too. My truck doesn't fit in my garage so it must sit outside on a very windy hill all night.
I just purchased a K&N to fit the stock airbox about a month ago. It cost $72. 00 for a flat filter so I was thinking the bigger-better one would be at least $100. 00. Called the same place I bought the stock K&N (Pro Trucks) and ask for a RE-0880, he will have one for me tommorow for $52. 00! Is this a good price? I searched the net for a price but had no luck.

... lol

HVAC, When the K&N gets dirty I will get the Recharger kit from K&N. It has the Cleaner and spray oil in it.

Scott, Will you have a version of the Psychotty (ducting ect,) that we can just plumb to our exsisting RE-0880 Scotty Air System?

The snow is there, yes. I have this Psychotty air hooked up in a way that reduces the chance of snow getting into the 'tube'.
Thats a good price for the filter. I think I paid about 55. 00 USD.
I was at the mtns yesterday and put shovels of snow on the inlet area... the majority of it did not fall into the area where the plenum is and any that did fell below the lip. I know its a concern no matter what air intake you have. I have seen factory air boxes with snow in them. As long as there isn't a lot getting past the filter... a little moisture will not hurt. I have yet to encounter a very wet filter. Also, I have seen a factory filter damp but the other side is dry and so is the turbo hose.

I will be watching it closely.

1968 HHD, I just purchased the K&N Air Force (red) Foam Pre-Cleaner (#25-0880), which is a custom fit for the #RE-0880 filter element (I also just purchased). The foam type pre-cleaner is oiled prior to use, stopping most of the dirt prior to the filter element itself. I have found through past experience that the main filter element only required cleaning approximately every third time the pre-cleaner was cleaned.

According to the K&N catalog, the foam pre-cleaner (#25-0880) imposes a "2%" air flow restriction whereas, K&N states the #22-8035(PK) sock type filter covers, impose "less than a 10%" air flow restriction. This is a considerable difference. Something to consider.
