71 HEMI Cuda Convertible 4 speed

School me on 87 Chevy 6.2 diesel

Comparing the two transmissions behind the same engine Cummins 6.7 just a little difference in HP, hauling near the same weight, One cant haul the weight that the other can is why. What would be your choice in Transmissions.

6 speed Aisin or the 6 speed Allison ??

Aisin all the way. Had an 04 Chevy w/Allison that went lemon-law. The Allison 1000 is highly overrated IMHO.

The biggest problem with the Allison, is that the TCM will detune the DMAX to protect its self under high torque conditions. An example is my 05 5spd Allison with the DMAX, would always lose power when I went to pass a slower vehicle and would scare the crap out of me. I had a close call once and that taught me to be very cautious if I had to pass another vehicle.

Allison 2500RDS/WR 6speed

Should have thought to add trucks but didn't want to get into a war about products,

5500 Dodge or Ram what ever its called this week vs 650 Ford

I would not be afraid of either one, both trucks are very capable. Keep in mind the 5500 is a midrange truck, the 650 is a true medium duty. The 650 will have more options, built heavier from bumper to bumper and has a tilt hood:)

Anyone know how hard it would be to put an Allison 3000 behind a 5.9 ? ( Kinda off topic, but... )
I personally wouldn't waist my money. The Aison's are a better trans and would be easier to adapt. You also have to consider that the Allisons TCM has to be reprogramed, I don't know about the 3000, but it has been done in the past. If you do a search, you might find the info on the projects.

Off Topic: Are you thinking of doing that to your 1st Gen?

Check on the internet and you will find complaints about the Allison 1000 that it doesn't oil some clutches, 3rd I think, unless it is in that gear, and that the oil passages send the oil at an angle to the clutches so they don't engage straight on. That pickup truck Allison is another example of an old-time name getting contaminated by the bean counters, just like Detroit Diesel and the pickup truck 6.2/6.5. From what I can figure out, the Aisin is about 100 pounds heavier than the Allison, which must translate to extra beef.

NIsaacs has a good point, it's awfully hard to argue against a tilt-hood versus wresting the alligator.
