thanks on the CFC, I've read it more than once.. but just looking for someone who has actually done it... at most I'd be carrying one long gun and hopefully a revolver along for the ride.

figuring on entering Canada somewhere in Michigan, around Lake Huron and Superior and then taking a ride across the Canadian Plains and then heading northwest.. on the return route from the Last Fronteir probably Cassiar Hwy down toward Seattle/Vancouver and then who knows?

anybody ever taken that car ferry that crosses Georgian Bay to Manitoulin Island with a Rv instead of going around Georgian Bay?

"hopefully a revolver along for the ride." That would be a ride to the Mounted Police Jail. They are VERY serious about this. Also if you have ever had a DWI you will be turned back at the boarder.

Snoking, my reading of it sounds like they will let you take a certain kind of pistol across the border with you... as long as you follow their rules... it sounds like they have 3 classes of firearm. approved, restricted and forbidden..

by along for the ride I meant locked in the trailer. not stuffed in my drivers seat like I do in Florida. LOL

Firearms Allowed, Restricted and Prohibited
Approval of the Non-Resident Firearms Declaration allows only standard rifles and shotguns commonly used for hunting and target shooting to be transported into or through Canada.

Handguns with at least 4-inch barrels are considered "restricted" firearms and are allowed in Canada, but require the completion an approval of an Application for an Authorization to Transport Restricted Firearms. This Non-Resident Firearm Declaration costs $50 Canadian.

Handguns with barrels shorter than 4-inches, fully automatic, converted automatics, and assault-type weapons are "prohibited" and not allowed in Canada.

In addition, certain knives, even those used for hunting and fishing, may be considered prohibited weapons by Canadian officials.

well, there goes that idea, I knew the Glock was a No Go, but my snubby was the revolver I was talking about. oh well, probably just as well , only really need my 12 gage for piece of mind. LOL

A high powered rifle is recommended for protection from the bigger wild life. But you dont need a pistol unless you want to be prepared to shoot yourself in the head before the grizzly gets you. But honestly. Unless you live in downtown chicago or la, you are never really going to need a pistol in this country or even canada. At least not yet. Im 69 years old, and the only time I ever carried a gun was the 13 months I spent in vietnam.

I aint really worried about crime or any of that stuff in Canada, but you know how it is, I'm Merikan, always have a pistol on my travels down here in the states so its just a habit where I sort of like to have one with me,not that I can't adjust. I'll just have to go without. probably just put the Marlin Guide Gun in the Trailer, fill out the form and pay the 25 bucks Canadian and call it good enough. LOL

any of you ever taken the ferry across Georgian Bay?

As a former life long Alaskan, I highly recommend the Milepost. Yes, a lot of folks travel without it but it is money well spent. You don't necessarily have to fill up every time you reach 1/2 a tank as the milepost shows you the fuel stations ahead plus it give the wife something to read during the long stretches. Finally, it has a lot of interesting information which you might miss as it serves as a road guide with tons of things to see, do, places to pull over and camp, etc. I've been on (as a child) or driven the highway as an adult seven times...only once without the Milepost back in 2011, and would not recommend going without one. As for taking a weapon into Canada, my recommendation is to have it sent from one FFL to another in Alaska. You won't need it in Canada and the hassle of crossing into Canada and then into the U.S. just isn't worth it. My two cents...

Lots of road construction this year in Alaska. From Tok to Glennallan and down on the Kenai. Never taken a long gun thru Canada..too much of a hassel. I carry couple cans of wasp spray and baseball bat. Cant take mace but can carry bear spray as long as its labeled. As above posters said slow down and watch for red flags along the road indicating frost heaves.
