Anyone ever had experience with the Alaskan Campers?

Not looking for some top heavy GIANT in bed camper for a Quick Get a Way place to take a snooze at the end of the day or on the road in route to or from a Photo op. I need something that will take the COLD in the DEAD OF WINTER. I knew a kid who's Dad had an Alaskan camper that looked more like something that Airstream would have made. His Dad went everywhere in the Damn thing year around, just wondering if these are still the truth in advertising about the cold.

I had built a Teardrop trailer (enlarged just a bit) for the idea but found that at 85+ MPH the tires were only making touch & go's behind the truck OR so the Hwy Patrolman said :-laf

It definitely would have it's advantages over a traditional camper, but what a poor website. To find a picture of it in the up position I had to view more than a dozen pictures in the Video section. There were none in the Gallery.

I have the smallest long bed Lance camper (Lance 850) With the four season package. I use it in some pretty cold weather in Minnesota and it's easy to keep warm. It probably wouldn't cost as much as an Alaskan which is a very old design that is pricey if you want thermopane windows etc., also without the hassle of putting it up and down in the cold weather.

You can about 'name your price' with a Lance at the moment. Choosing between a Northwood Manufacturing Arctic Fox (only have sliders) and a Lance was tough. The Northwood Wolf Creek (no sliders) is not a good choice for extreme cold vs. the Arctic Fox line. I went for max comfort w/o towing a travel trailer and have no illusions about going places fast with it.

You might look at this design that doesn't go over the cab.

Big, look for a Northern Lite Truck Camper. http://www.northern-lite.com/ They are the only 5 star rated. Second choice are Lance and Arctic Fox, which are two of many 4 star rated.

Your post had me looking hard at Northern Lite this past weekend. Before then, I was set on Arctic Fox. I'm now trying to fully come to terms without having a slide before making my final decision. Wish there was a Norther Lite dealer here in GA.

I will say though I think the 5-star rating is questionable to me. Not because I have experience on the campers and/or their quality, but because you have to pay to even read the reviews of it and others. To me, that kills credibility. I can't even find the criteria online as to how this rating is even determined.

I was all gung ho on a Northern Lite and bought a new one in 2003. My A/C slowly sunk into the roof even with the large extra piece they glued to the roof under it. That wasn't as bad as the side seams of the "Never leak design" leaked slowly and rotted the floor with no sign of water. All after the warranty expired of course. I was warned by another TDR member but didn't listen. I traded it in on my current Lance which is really built so much better than my Northern Lite was. I took a huge loss on trade in with the soft floor.

I went from Lance to Northern Lite and back to Lance again. By the way, I still have my original 1994 Lance permanently parked on my hunting land as a deer shack. Everything still works and it doesn't leak either.

Ron,

Sorry to hear about Northern Lite. I have never had one, but according RV Consumer Group (RVCG) they are the best of the Truck campers. I did have a large Lance for 10 years, which was great, except for the Domatic fridge. I've also read on RVCG about how good Arctic Fox campers are, which are 4 star rated same as Lance.

If looking for a hard-sided, popup, slide-in camper, I think Alaskan is still the only one? Probably a good product (still), but I visited their factory a few years ago and it appears they are a very small operation and I came away a bit concerned about their future...

For the past five years I've been playing with soft-sided popup campers (still have a travel trailer too), first two Four Wheel Campers, and now a Hallmark RV. Really like the Hallmark camper and people. Cold wether performance is critical for me as well and is something Hallmark touts. Lower overall height and off-pavement capability is also key for my use. They are not inexpensive.
