The Forgotten War, Coming Home

Rockin and rolling. It was a whopper. I was driving home when it hit and the truck started wandering all over the road and I was thinking that there was something wrong with the truck when the main jolt hit and the front end started going back and forth across the lane. I looked up at the trees and they were moving big time. That was then I knew we had a big one. In the space of 5 or 6 hours after the quake, I counted more than 2 dozen aftershocks. Some of them were pretty good size. That is more than I can remember on the big one in 64 which was 9. 2 in size. Bunch of stuff upstairs fell off and over. So far no damage. They say they felt it as far away as Louisiana.

Thanks for asking.

It's good to hear that you've had few injurys. If that one would have been down here, I'm sure we wouldn't have faired as well... ...

Wife and I were in Godfathers eating with our daughter and her three sons. The building and cars started doing a back and forth like shuffle. I felt the movement in the chair and within my body especially at the point of reversal shifting. My daughter stated, "It is true that you get a dizzy feeling during an earthquake". I believe the shuffling duration was two to three minutes. Time duration must have a major part in causing the dizzy sensation. I've been in several small quakes and others that gave sharp jolts and never had the sensation. With this quake, I did experience some minor dizzy sensations.

I agree with you ... AK was lucky. The results would be very different had the quake center been in a populated city.

Our prayers and best wishes for all Alaskans after that quake.

Quick question for you guys. The always accurate  news channel in Sacramento this morning reported that Anchorage is the capital of Alaska. I know it had been a big push for many years to have Anchorage designated as the capital, but didn't know it had actually happened. If in fact the news was right... ... ???

Thanks,

Tom

That's pretty much what I figured. If the all knowing news media can't even get a State capitol right... ... ... ...

No big surprise there.

Anchorage is the largest city and may have contributed to the mistake. Efforts to move the capitol to Anchorage or a nearby area for better access has been an on going issue for years.

We Alaskans have to use airplanes or boats to visit our capitol.

As Paul Harvey would say ... "Now you know the rest of the story"

Jerry

Yep, I have known of the issue for quite a while. I was fortunate enough to have visited Anchorage in the summer of 1978 while on a family vacation. We stayed with one of my dad's hunting partners for a month before my dad and his buddy went out after caribou. I remember even back then the subject of Juneau being so isolated was a big issue.
