Okay, guys... I was reading all of your wisdom (and experience) and saw that you guys stated it is pretty much standard for these (similar to 2010) to be stuck at 16-18mpg. Soooooo, I took this as a "challenge"... ;)

So, I filled up the tank Thursday and departed immediately... For those of you that aren't familiar with this particular trip, it isn't really a "pretty, sight-seeing" kinda trip... It's rolling hills, a couple of 6% inclines/declines (but they're short), and during this particular trip, we were dealing with ambient temps ranging from a low of 64 at about 3:30am this morning, to a high of 107 yesterday along I-10 between Fredericksburg and Fort Stockton. There were HUGE lightning storms and heavy rains experienced both going and coming, the longest of which lasted about 20 minutes. Of course, that being said, there were also the associated head and side winds along with these, as well...

So, here is the "data"... 964 miles each way, same route. I traveled East on I-40 to Clines Corners, NM, south on Highway 285 through Vaughn, through Roswell, through Artesia, through Carlsbad, through Pecos, TX to Fort Stockton, TX and turned east onto I-10 to Highway 290 and into Fredericksburg, TX, next morning on to San Antonio, TX... Of course, having a practically brand new, barely worn in truck (that is days old to me) on a brand new course, and not knowing how many issues I may experience along the way, how much I could trust the gauge readings, how much fuel would cost along the way, etc. ; I wanted to stay over half on the fuel gauge... So, I stopped in Roswell and topped off from barely over 3/4 of a tank. Stopped in Artesia and topped off again from about the same level... Topped off in Fort Stockton and then again in Fredericksburg. Average mpg on the EVIC read 19. 9mpg. My math showed it was actually 19. 9983mpg. Not too shabby!!! :D

On the trip back, I left San Antonio and drove to Fort Stockton, topped off and drove straight through to Albuquerque. Average on the EVIC reads 20. 2mpg. My math showed it to actually be 20. 2895mpg. ALMOST 21MPG!!! WITH AN ALMOST 8,000 POUND 4X4 TRUCK!!! AWESOME!!!:D:-laf (the 8k# is merely a guess based upon the known weight of my 01, my 05 Hemi and my Father's 03 3500 CC 4X4 DRW... It's probably a little bit lighter... )

For the record, I submit the attached picture of the EVIC...

Also, this is a bone-stock 2010 2500 Crew Cab 4X4 with 3. 73s driving 265X75X17 BFG A/Ts. There has been NOTHING done to this truck to improve the trucks performance!!! I set the cruise at between 67 and 69mph the entire trip, except when the speed limit was lowered, as I drove through these smaller towns...

Any 's, comments and/or thoughts are ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED!!! ;)

Thats great info. Thank you. I know a lot of people complain about these trucks fuel mileage. I've owned a 2004. 5 (600 cummins) and this 2010. I've been driving the same way to work for the past 19years. It's a mixture of mostly highway with some stop and go. My 04. 5 got roughly 14-17mpg depending on how I drove it (hand cal). This truck on it's very first tank got 16mpg (hand cal). This truck tends to go faster without me realizing it. But over all I'm getting the same mpg range. I have yet to take a long trip without towing something.

My 04. 5 got on a long trip 21mpg(without towing) but that was with a Smarty JR (economy mode), banks exhaust and an afe intake system. I expect that this truck (completely stock) will be fairly close.

For a truck that weighs in at around 7,600lbs it's not too shabby.....

Good mileage, I'm impressed. I'm also impressed that the overhead and hand calculated mileage are that close.

My overhead and hand calc differ widely on my 05.

Excellent! It'll be interesting to see what you get if you go with a 285-75-17,34" tire.

Honestly,my '07 5. 9 gets the identical fuel mileage as my '98. 5 got.

A 4th silently whizzed by me on the freeway the other day. Very fine trucks.

Back in 07, with my new 3500 C&C, on my trip from SoCal to Kansas and back. I posted the entire trip MPG, as well as the trip MPG between each tank. I reported both The computer as well as hand calculated and they were pretty close as well.

I don't know how to "Linkback" so I didn't post it. But if anyone is interested, it was a detailed report, and if anyone searches for it, can you please post it for me, or at least instruct me how to linkback. :)

Answers...

Well, guys... I have an auto. I had 285s on my 01 and LOVED them!!! Can't wait til these are burnt off, then they are getting upgraded!!! Thanks, guys!!!

Good MPG but with my 2010 the best I every got was 16 thats hand calc and flat driving. When towing it went south in a hurry. The lowest was 4 mpg going over the rockies towing a goose neck total weight about 24,000 the best was 8 mpg with the same weight empty towing same trailer was 11.

Gears 3. 73 6 speed manaul

Thats doing the post speed limits.

Informative post, MisterBean, thank you! I used to check my mileage religiously on my 2004. 5. The hand calc and overhead were always within 0. 5 mpg of each other, usually closer. I'm hoping my 2012 will be like MisterBean's!

Intentions...

Thanks, Hogsty!

Just to make sure my intent is perfectly clear, here... I was joking when I said that, "I took this as a "challenge"... " I am NOT disputing ANYTHING that ANYONE has previously posted about these trucks and/or their personally observed mileage. I just thought, as it appears many of you did as well, that these trucks, even with more EPA-crap attached, should be "capable" of achieving better than 16-18mpg.

Just wanted to make sure my intentions were clear... ;)
