Had the auto serviced the other day and surprisingly enough #ad
, at only 48K, the pan was full of shavings. Towing a even a small trailer, I can detect a little shudder while accelerating from a stop. Otherwise, the transmission still functions reasonably well for a stock unit.

My question is: Is this enough to insist that the dealer rebuild the transmission under the extended warranty? Or are they just going to laugh in my face?

I would definatley insist on a new or rebuilt transmission. All those shavings came from somewhere! If you are experiencing a shudder now, it will only get worse and could possible leave you stranded someplace when it does fail entirely. Based on your descriptions it sound like your torque converter is on its way out, thats just an experienced guess. To know for sure it needs to be torn down for a complete inspection. If your dealer won't act responsibly and correct the situation go someplace else. Best of luck!
 
Those shavings are normal,to a point,so is dust in the pan. When I put my shift kit in I couldnt believe the amount of metal in the pan. The screen pickup was covered in it,and the pan had a small amount too. I dont know if you looked at the shavings,but you could get an idea of whats going south by the materail in the pan,was it brass?aluminum,or steel?Mine was mostly steel,they were attracted to a magnet. I havent had any problems with it. I think the TCC puts a lot of metal in the pan during normal operation,mine just put a little extra in from the TCC slipping from TST kit,until i installed shift kit,that is.
 
This is where oil analysis on a regular basis comes in real handy.

Whether to worry or not depends on what you mean by shavings. Brass shavings are quite common in the Cummins Diesel, steel shavings imply high mileage or planetary gear wear.
If you have aluminum shavings you are in big trouble buddy.

Unfortunately due to time constraints, I didn't do the transmission service myself. My mechanic didn't specify what the shavings were made up of when I talked with him. I think that I'll stop by today and have another chat with him if there's time.

My shudder from stop to 18mph was a combo of two things and it wasn't the transmission. First I bought a used truck and the previous owner had removed the heavy leaf spring from the bottom of the spring assy to the top for a better ride. When I loaded 1600 pounds the whole truck would shake/shudder from a dead stop. The srings were bucking back and forth or hobby horsing. Didn't dicover this until I had the driveline redone thinking it was U joints. We placed the springs in the proper order and most of the shudder disappeared. The slight shudder that is still there is covered by a TSB 03-02-96 which say replace driveline with one piece instead of a two piece driveline. Wish I had that info before I rebuilt the two piece driveline. Stephen's won ton dually in Sanger CA.
