Even the Allison trans has it's share of problems. A retired co worker broke down in So Cal. on his way to Alaska with his Duramax crew cab and fifth wheel camper. Camper weight is about 14K, every automatic has trouble towing this kind of load. Too bad he was stuck in one location for 9 days until the dealer gave him his truck back.

I used to work for Detroit-diesel/Allison,you ain't telling me nothing new. Those transmission guys always had more than enough work  . I worked in the truck shop but there was always plenty of Allisons laying around to be worked on. transmission guys agreed that any auto has a rough life behind a Diesel and pulling any kind of weight... Tough Life

Every auto trans is subject to a tough life if the driver does any type of towing above about 5,000 lbs. You are asking alot of the bands and clutch packs to be able to hold the various members from turning-slipping. I also know he had an EDGE installed to jack up the power output of the Duramax. I was in the truck when he first bought it and that baby could haul. It got up and went!!! Mentioned to him that the trans would never hold out and last with that kind of abuse, do not care who built it. Any kind of heavy load should probably be handled by a 6 speed manual box. Just a thought!
