Has anyone heard the rumor that Dodge will be using the Allison transmission in the futrue? This rumor has been brought to my attention 3 times within the last 2 months.

Or is this just wishfull thinking!

Well, I personally think it's just wishful thinking. However, at Detroit GM had a 6BT mated up to an Allison transmission with an integral electric motor in it. A sort of hybrid drive system. Transmission was GIGANTIC... it's meant for city busses. Not sure how many speeds were in the transmission, but the entire assembly could be made much smaller without the electric motor.

why would you want a trans that has more warrantee claims than the 48re?

i saw that engine/transmission combo last year at the GM booth of the toronto auto show... i was there on GM's bill at a promotional thing [and going again this year too] and i so wanted to get into shooting the poop with the gm reps and bring up why the engine they had on display there had daimlerchrysler badge on it :-laf:-laf

DC reportedly has 2 auto transmissions in testing. A 58RE for the light duty and a 6 speed auto for 4500/5500 series trucks that they are developing in-house. Whether and when they will get it done and use it is a point of discussion.

I suspect the rumors of the Allison behing the ISB comes from RV industry where they are using a ISB RV275 and Allison 1000 in some of the motor coaches complete with engine management. This is probably one reason why the Allison won't be seen behind the more powerful motors.

One can only hope if DC every gets a 5 speed auto they do a better job of designing and implementing the engine and torque management than Ford or GM did. Better yet just build the blasted thing heavy enough to not need all the computerized garbage to save itself.

Thats just it, in its current form, as used by GM, there are several issues. I have owned two of them in Chevy trucks. First the programming stinks if you ask me. They jump out of fifth at the slightest provocation. My 48re's stay in OD even with big applications of throttle. When the D-max hits 2500 rpm it is really noisy, and the Allison, as programmed, does this all the time, even running empty. Then there is clearly a torque capacity issue. They are de-fueling the engine in first and fifth to keep torque to 520 lb/ft, how would it fare behind a 610 Cummins? The 48re takes the full torque load. The Allisons grade braking works well for the most part. It scared the heck out of me a few times though as it will drop a gear and send the rpms into the red. Going down a steep grade with a load on and 3500 rpms on the tach didn't do my heart any good ;) I also found that it shifts a lot. Guys say that about the 48re but I think the Allison is just as bad but maybe a little smoother about it. I had enough concerns on my first one (an early '01) that I had an Allison engineer in my truck with a laptop taking readings. He came up with a re-flash based on my running in fourth when loaded issue. He admitted that GM had its hands into the program much more than Allison would like. They run application specific programs for HD customers but for GM it had to be a one size fits all. That brings me right back to the GM trucks biggest failing, trying to be too carlike, trying to please soccer moms with what should be a work truck.

With enough torque capacity and a more agressive program, I'd love to see the change. On the other hand I doubt DC needs Allison to do the work, sounds like they are working on it themselves. If they do it in a similar fashoin to the 47-48re upgrade, we should be all set :)

The allison 1000 has had it problems, but future med. duty trucks such as a 4500/5500 series may sport the heavier duty allison 3000 (6sp auto) which is widely used now.

Allison is owned by GM, I doubt they're going to sell DC a transmission.

That said the 1000 series Allison is no more Allison than the 4L80-E, it's just a name. Real Allisons do not have, "Park. "

i know this is off subject but i was in mexico last year and i saw a dodge with duelly hauling water and the badges said 4500. is this a mexico only option or what. it had a v10.

the drivers down there suck

Yep, south of the border they the 4500/5500 series trucks. Kinda makes you wonder, huh?

When Chevy first announced that they were using an allison transmission for their Duramax it was mentioned that Allison's (Chevy's) policy was that they would sell their transmissions to anyone (Manufacturer) that wanted them. Apparently that quickly changed with the allison 1000. I guess they wanted and edge to their competition. I forgot which company (Ford or Dodge) was thinking about suing them. It was probably Ford. They tried to buy Cat and then Cummins.

I had an 03 3500 DURAMAX W/Allison, I will tell you that the transmission is not what it is cracked up to be. I do tow a little weight but the @ about 20,000 miles the truck would shake at take off like you were on a wash boardy road, the fluid smelled like burnt toast and both the dealers I took it to said the "could not duplicate the problem" @ 31000 miles I traded it for a dodge and have never looked back. I think the dealers thought it would make it till the warranty was out then I could pay for it. I f dodge offered one i would not even think off getting that peice of junk in my truck.

Just my opinion.
