Went out at 6:30 this morning to get some miles in before taking the truck in for an oil change. I was riding on a bike path near Cherry Creek park in SE Denver, and was crossing a small wooden bridge made of 6x6 ties at about 20+ MPG, when I noticed that the storm last night had removed several of the ties about half way across the bridge. Couldn't believe my eyes at first. Slamed on the brakes, started skidding and knew I wouldn't be able to stop before hitting the gap. Fortunately the bike slipped out from under me and it stopped when it hit the gap. I stopped about 1 foot short. I rolled around for a minute, trying to figure out if I broke my back. Finally got up. I called 911 and the sheriff came and we put up some yellow crime sceen tape on each end of the bridge to warn other cyclists until someone could fix the bridge. Bike's OK, I got a sore back and some road rash on my butt. Got to Broadway Dodge three minutes late and got the oil changed (free for life), lube job ($11. 00), and adjusted the left-rear door under warranty, and was out in an hour. Great service! Bad day? ... not IMHO. I'm very thankfull.
