We just brought home a new (for us) 2001 manufactured June of 2000, quad cab, CTD, ETH, DEE. I ordered new filters, and will install upon arrival. We checked and topped all fluids. I cleaned up the leaking bottle. This is a 4x4 with 23,000 miles. My question is what else should I look at and check? My understanding wife, it is her truck after all, said NO bombing. She likes the diesel the way it sounds and goes. I want to be sure to cover the obvious maintenance items. Thanks

Snug up the turbo hose clamps and consider changing the rear differential lube at some point in the near future. When I changed I went to synthetics in the differential. As always, I recommend torqing the intake cover bolts to specs. Every one I've looked at and checked (about 12 of them) have been a little loose.

Quick . . . remove the snorkel & silencer ring when she's not looking:D

Go to Genosgarage.com they have a great deal on what they call the 4-2-1 fleetguard package. It's 4 oil, 2 fuel and 1 air filter for $77. 00!!! My Cummins parts manager said that was a great deal!

Then get the shop manual, you can get the order info in the back of the stock "Owners Manual" (which I recommend you read front to back) for $90. 00. It's a good reference and walks you through pretty much everything you might have to do.

Check the rear brakes, jack up both rears, place stands on housing, remove wheels, place two lug nuts per side on the studs, then (this sounds nuts but it works, unless you like pounding on $100 ea drums) start it up, hold foot firmly on the break pedal and go from forward to reverse you'll hear them "pop" loose, this make it easy to pull them off. You see the drums rust (very quickly) to the axels and it's real tough to get em off otherwise.

Good luck, happy motoring.

Congratulations on your new truck!

My wife and I also just brought home a new to us 2001 quad cab.

The first things I'm going to do are replace the fluids w/ amsoil and have the front end alignment checked - the steering wheel isn't quite centered. Then EGT/boost/transmission temp gauges... .

Apparently our wives are more understanding than the previous owners'; my dealer told me my truck was traded in for a PT Cruiser

Cheers,

Drew

Mutch - sounds real similar to my situation. 09/01/00 bought the truck in my sig. with 3700 miles on it, had a 98' 1500 4x4 to get sold also have an '83 CJ7 but instead of an old chevy I've got a '55 Willys pickup.

We were in VA for the junior olympics at the end of July. We saw how they are rebuilding the beach down there, seems to be working pretty good.

Thanks for the good suggestions. I have ordered the filter special. I changed the engine oil, and checked fluid levels. I will definately change out the rear differential. I like the idea of the synthetics. Next is the fuel filter. And while the wife is not looking I can start on the good stuff. Hard to complain when the wife wants a Cummins in the driveway.
