I replaced the starter contacts in the 98 and 01 today. The 98 had the smaller contact on both sides. The 01 had the larger contact on one side and the small contact on the other side. Larry B's kits contained larger contacts for both sides. Was surprised to see them different sizes on the 01. Is this normal or had someone tried to fix the 01 starter before we bought it?

The attached pic is of the 98 @ 180k miles.

Both contacts start as the same size. You're seeing the wear on them. Just did mine on my 12v and they looked the same as yours. Usually, the one on the positive side is burned smaller. They are supposed to be about 1/4" new, mine was down to 1/32".

i replaced my contacts today with the larry b's kit that includes the plunger. my truck is a 2001 with 111k miles. the contacts were clearly different sizes when new. the worn one was much wider. the smaller one had little wear.

the wider contact and the contact ring on the plunger were both pitted.
