Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) alot of barkin'

hey and thanks in advance but my 96 auto has been makin alot of noise ----it has a high tech turbo 62/14 with afe intake ,4 in ex, 90hp injectors, 3 pc ex manifold, and ats intake manifold, but my concern is the turbo seems to bark and sputter when i get into it especially after it shifts into overdrive to the point where i have to back out of it and gradually give it more throttle, slow speeds no problems but gettin on it like to enter the freeway seems to barks and sputter(the turbo). The truck runs good its just anoying as hell and it dosent seem to be dialed in properly,any thoughts?

You say you have a 62/14 but what exhaust wheel do you have inside?. Exhaust wheel size has alot to do with the bark you are hearing... . Andy

That "bark" is a compressor stall and could demolish the turbo. The dynamics of a stall can cause the blades to crack at the root and eventually break. Then you will really be annoyed.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but while we are barkin, my stock 96 will bark only when I am towing heavy and let off the throttle fast. When I let off, it will bark 2-3 times. Is this harmful?

My only experience with damage from compressors stalls are from helicopter turbine engines, but since the only real difference is size I would say yes.

Um, if the engine makes noise when you get into it, its probably not a turbo bark.

As said above, bark only happens when you let off the throttle real fast and the pressure in the intake manifold pushes back on the compressor wheel, stalling it (real bad).

Sounds like you have a different problem. Possibly your torque converter slipping making some weird noise? doesnt sound like your turbo tho

edit-- thought about it again, have you checked your fuel pressure? Your overflow valve might be weak and not allowing full pressure to the engine. Take out the cap and stretch the spring to at least 1/2" or a little more, and try it again.

My automatic truck will bark when it upshifts under certain loaded conditions, I thought it was just normal.

Put up with the "barking" after fueling mods for a long time, but now with the Super B, I bark no more.

BTW, with the TT in tow, my truck hauls butt.

It may be too big for your current set up. Your exhaust wheel may be too big like Hammer says. You may need more fuel and/or timing. It will lag once your RPM drop down into over drive and it takes a lot of fuel to get it spinning back up to where it was... watch your boost pressure it will drop then start fluctuating until it spools back up. Too much load for the turbo, it is out of its map. Had the same problem with a II phat shaft 66.



It will wreck your turbo for sure if you keep it up. The sound is the turbo stalling from say 80,000 rpm as an example, Essentually it wants to turn the turbo in the opposite direction immediately and then the forward and backward and so on pushing air backwards through your air filter... WUUFFF. . FFF. . FFF... . FFF = not good!
