My opinion....(long)
Now, I know that I haven't posted on here too much as of yet, but I do have a very strong opinion about stereo systems anymore.
I started out in my '97 Chevy with an Alpine 7835. I bought this after being around my friend who had had two Alpines before, and they were all very good. He continued to upgrade after I bought mine, and now has one that originally retailed for $350, but has gone to crap over the two years he's owned it. I had never bought another deck after my first Alpine, and thought that I'd always stay with Alpine... then I decided to make my pickup

mad:

a '98 Toyota Tacoma... I know, I know, BAD mistake in buying this and not a CTD... hindsite is 20/20) "bump" a little bit.
I started doing some research and installed a Rockford Fosgate 500. 1 amp, a RF HE2 12" sub, and an overly huge box. Well, with the deck that came in my pickup, a Pioneer 45x4, the amp had to be run almost full power at all times so that it sounded good and hit hard. When I wanted it to really hit, I had to crank up the volume on the deck, which in turn distorted the stock speakers (at the time I thought they were blown).
Well, the deck was the next thing, so I started looking into them. Looked at the Alpines for a long time, but what I wanted/needed was just too much $$$ and really didn't have that great of features. I found a guy who put an awesome system into his pickup, and checked out what deck he was running. He had a Kenwood KDC-X817. I thought it looked pretty good, so tried to find one... well, I couldn't find one, so started looking above it and found the KDC-X917. The only difference is that you can turn off the internal amp on the X917. These were on sale at the audio store near me for $475. I bought mine on e-bay for $350 shipped!!! I installed it myself, hooked everything up, and it's just awesome!!!! I've NEVER had it skip once, off-road, highway driving, bumping some really hard hitting music. It has never overheated on me, and I've ran it with cd's for basically 14 hours straight while driving down to school from home... only break to eat and gas up.
This deck comes with a remote, has a moving/detacheable face that self-hides when you turn off the key, and just plain kicks a$$. The one downside I've seen to this deck is that the buttons on it are very small, but to me, that's why it has the remote... you don't need the buttons.
If you're serious about putting some money into a deck, definetely look at this one, or even better are the two Kenwoods above it in their lineup. I would have loved to have gotten one with mp3 reading technology, but the cheapest I could find was $600 on ebay. 120 songs on one cd would be pretty good.
As is, I'm very happy. My stock speakers never distort now with the 50x4 power rating (even though you only get 20 out of it anyway) and it's clear as all get out.
Oh, don't buy one of those oversized decks... just buy the insert to adapt the regular ones into the hole. You can get them to either fill up the entire space with the deck in the middle, or with a small storage space below it.
Just my $. 02, but I hope I gave you some insite.
Later, Josh.
