Jeff Garmon has come up with a bracket that you install over the dowel pin using a factory bolting location. These brackets are laser cut and shaped to safely secure the pin in it's factory location.

Some people have expressed hesitation with the drilling process of a jig, and in many cases when the pin has already started it way out, the front cover has to come off anyway right?

Jeff can tell you all about it but this is not an expensive bracket.

David,

That fix has been around a while. It's called a tab instead of a bracket. Easy to make one. E-mail me if you want the instructions on how to make one and install it.

KDP tab fix

Does the front cover have to come off to do the tab fix? I to am hesitant about drilling.

You mean the metal cover and not the cast aluminum part? I was quoted 22 hours to replace the aluminum part, now I found out that you can just remove the metal cover to expose the dowel pin in a couple of hours, is this right?

Cool. I just finished reviewing the pictures of the KDP so I know where to look. Is the damage (crack) always in the same place or can it be anywhere? If I dont see a cracked case than I am going to try posthaste to get a jig. If I dont see a cracked case than I am ok, right?

BTW, I love her 12V, wish I had one too.

Texas Diesel,

My cousin's 97 busted the case right up on the top above the fuel pump, but I know many break it down in front near where the pin originates. I guess the pin can ride up the gear train to different points before getting wedged between a gear and the case.

Someone here posted about a pin finding it's way to the front face of a gear and rolling around till it wore a hole in the front cover.

Texas Diesel... .

I've tab'd 3 trucks so far. Joe G has some good instructions that will walk you right through it. In addition, I have prepared a paper with all of the parts numbers that you'll need to do the job.

PM me with your e-mail address and I'll e-mail them to you. Paper has pictures, instructions for the remove and install process for the timing cover, specs for making your own tab - everything.

Give a wack at it! It's a very rewarding process.

I have a few tricks that work well for getting the fan off and the vibration dampner. Let me know if you decide to go for it and I'll PM you with me home phone number. Then you can call me if you get into a bind and I'll help walk you through it. A quick call to learn some trick can save LOTS of time and frustration.

Good Luck.

Send me the notes and pics on your insights for KDP please?
