Found a cheap fix for a non-working ND alternator for our 1st gens this past weekend - the alt quit charging on my '92 so I pulled it off and had a look at it. Turned out that the brushes were shot. Just so happens that the replacement brush holder/set for a Honda automobile uses the same brushes! You have to un-solder the brushes out of the holder and re-solder them into your alt, but for about $25. 00, beats the heck out of buying another alt! Put the new ones in and we're back to charging! Honda part number: 31105-PZ1-003.

Always good to have alternatives, thanks for posting. But, is there a problem finding the brushes by their actual application? I had an electric shop replace brushes for me once. He charged me about the same price, and he did it for me. I don't remember him soldering anything, but it was a few years ago...

I'm sure that a competent alternator shop could probably supply them by application - this was just a quick fix that I did at work with the parts that I had available! :)

That's cool. I was just wondering if this needed to go to the "discontinued parts" forum.

Now, if I can only remember that when I break down near a honda dealer!;)

Actually I'd like to see this "alternative solution" posted in the discontinued parts forum too... . good find !!!

I wonder though,,, did you use regular solder or did you use higher temp silver solder???? Is there a need for one over the other in this application?? Temps???
