My grandpas 2002 (3500 auto 4x4) was having some problems on the way back from the ATS dyno day. about 2 miles from ATS, the check gauges light came on and the voltmeter was pegged at 18volts. he pulled over, and as soon as it came to an idle, it went back down. He drove another few miles and it did it again. I think it ended up doing it about 15 times in 20 or so miles. As soon as we turned on the headlights, it didnt do it for another 200 or so miles. the headlight switch was so hot you couldnt lay your finger on it for very long. The dealer said it could be the PCM or the Alternator, and that they usually go bad together?? I dont see how a PCM could cause an alternator to go, but I could see how the alternator could possible melt the PCM (and all the other wiring/electronics) if it is overcharging. The truck is just out of warranty.

any suggestions?

thanks,

Jeff

The PCM controls the alternator output. I would have the alternator checked at a reputable shop before going for the package. I have seen internal short in alternator cause high charge rate (in other vehicles). bg

PCM and Field Control

Chrysler has given the job of Alternator voltage regulation to the PCM on the late model cars. I am not 100 % certain that is true on your Dodge Ram but, I would not be surprised if this was fact. If the Voltage Regulator is no good in the PCM, you could always wire up an external electronic VR just like in days gone by. Would save alot of $$ over a re-manufactered PCM. Just a thought!! Hope this helps!!

Thanks guys. He is talking with the dealer right now. the truck is only about 1,000 miles out of warranty, and it seems as though they may take care of it for us. I doubt it, but at least they are being civil about it.
