can I use the stock 12V alternatoer in my superduty conversion ? I was told that it needs a seperate Voltage regulator so it won't work??

Yes you can use your 12V alternator in you conversion. Just add a 70's style mopar regulator. Very simple to do. Just google "70's stlye regualtor". This set up works but the voltage will flutter a little bit and may cause the lights to flicker a little bit.

My setup is identical to the one described above. My voltage doesn't flutter at all and it keeps a constant 14volts... maybe a hair above! I really like using this setup because everything looks stock(no brackets to mount a chevy or ford alt) the pulley is the right size and then you just mount the regulator on the fire wall. Mine looks great and works even better. One other thing you can also do with the Dodge Alt is to wire up a tach wire (Im not sure what kind of signal the Ford tach requires) but my GM tach is right on with my setup!

Good luck... Ryan

I'd take that "old" mech. reg. setup any day of the week than that computer controlled nightmare I have

how do ya wire a tach wire up??

I actually had my alt shop wire it up for me but anyone can do it. Actually... if you get the TDR Mag about a year ago or so there was a right up on it for a 1st Gen 12valve... its the same for all years. Anyway, you pull the back cover off, route a wire thru one of the casing holes and solder it into one of the soldered wires already there. I am sure someone that has done this them selves will be able to tell you which wire to solder to or it might be easier to just look at that TDR write up. I will look and see if I can get the issue # for you.

Mine works awsome though and one nice thing about having the tach hooked up this way... you will always know when the life of your ALT is going to end because the tach will start to act crazy and when it finally stops working your ALT is done... gives you a bit of time to find a place to get it fixed.

RyanB's right on the money. . I don't remember which TDR issue it is (48?? 50??), but there is a write up. . All you do is run a well insulated wire through the back cover, terminate to one of the stator posts with a small ring terminal & voila'. . ! tach lead. . !

As for the regulator - I took the pricey route & had a local starter / alternator shop install an internal regulator. . $70. . ?? dang it. . I shoulda saved some loot & went with the external regulator - but, it's done. .

I used a voltage regulator on my CTD conversion it works great and you can get on at a good alternator shop for like $25-$35.

Do you need a resistor in the line for the alternator wireing ????

according to my old mopar books it does ? Do you use just a old

gas tach like a after market ?

someone post that info , some of us dont have the old issues and were not members
