Im not sure if this is a problem. But Ive noticed that when I first start my truck (doesnt matter if it is warm or cold), the alternator is giving out just under 12 volts. After a few seconds, it goes back up to 14 and stays there (until I shut it off and start again).

I dont think it used to do that (maybe it did, but I dont think so)

Does it sound like my alternator may be getting ready to give up the ghost

Thanks,

What you describe is completrly normal. The grid heaters draw ahuge amount of power and will "cycle" on and off. After you get moving, they shut off.

Starting alone can pull a battery down too. And there is a difference in function of a volt meter and an anmeter.

alternator

Thanks,

Im sure thats the case, no reason to think different. I just dont remember the alternator needle staying to the left of center for several seconds. Even when the truck is warm and the grid heaters arnt coming on. (I put my volt meter on the battery when I started the truck, and it does read just under 12 volts when I first start for a few seconds, but then goes to 14)
