Alternator Mods?

My computer just quit in my 1992, and only the charging system voltage regulator does not work. I went to price a new computer, ouch... $650. 00 and I had to wait at least 1-2 weeks to get one.



Since everything else works in the computer, I was wondering if anyone has adapted a GM one wire alternator or something similar so I could skip the new truck payment for a computer deal. I thought that the project Tugboat had one on it, and now I can't remember. Thanks for the help

Hi R. E Miller why don't you put an external voltage regulator on your alternator like the older dodges and bypass the computer. I have done this on a gasser before with a computer it worked fine hope this helps

Russell, I've got to agree with Darrin. The external regulator is really easy to wire in and works great with the Nippendenso altenator. It's one of the most reliable altenators I've dealt with.

Hi Russell.



Since all other aspects of your computer work it might be the engine speed sensor that is bad and not the computer. If the computer does not sense the engine is running it will not activate the relay that energizes the generator field. It also could be that this relay that is bad. If the sensor is bad and you have a tachometer which recieves its signal from the factory wiring harness connector the tachometer will be sporadic or non-functional. If such a tachometer works then the relay would be the next most likely possiblity.
