This friggin truck of mine doesn't like fully charged battery in it no more, the only time it puts out enough power to charge the battery is at high idle... with just normal rpms i believe it discharges, cause it'll go down to like 8v or somewhere near. Get stranded every now and then i think it's time to take the time to exorcise this things demons lol Talking about Demons the Dodge Demon was quite a phenomanon. My brain says probably the diode bank in the alternator, my wallet says regulator. I remember the day when you used to be able to buy rebuild kits for these things and save tons of $$. Those days are gone my friends, they insist that they rebuild them for you

The regulator is part of the PCM. Have it checked at a good shop so you don't waste time and money changing the wrong part. Shadrach

Test the alternator and see if it still putting out a good charge. They will go bad and not charge at idle.

My alternator failed during the summer of 2010 at 228,000 miles, It cost me both of my batteries and my starter - that due to low voltage. I've wired in a push button starter switch which has solved the problem. I have checked the Dodge starting circuit and came to the conclusion that it is the ignition switch. I've got the electrical portion but the key set will not work with the new electrical part. BTW the part numbers are identical so thats not the problem. I need a key set but I'm too cheap to pay the dealer $$$.

I know for sure its putting nothing out at idle, disconnect the battery and the engine stalls. I remember being able to override a voltage regulator by poking it with a small screwdriver or nail or something... i wonder if there's a way to override these regulators? That would nail it right down which one is the problem.

Your nail test is for GM alt's. On the old Dodge you will see 2 small wires, they are the feild wires. One side is hot with ignition the other will be a varying ground to control the charge output.

If we were castrated at birth guaranteed I could do it, funny had to go through two women before I finally realize that they're put on this earth to clip our wings haha how's it goin buddy? I think of that beautiful fall day, sure do miss you guys - next time I'm gona put a matching set of divets right beside yours, Jeremy will be proud :)

Jeremy is too busy to notice divots. His wife just had their 3rd child a few weeks ago. He spends a lot of time in the hay mower or the truck now. ;) :-laf

Thanks for coming down and starting that fine fall tradition, I like it out there too.

rebuild parts for alt

I have all the rebuild parts for the alternators and starters in our trucks.

You can call me with your needs.

The problem you have sounds like one of the diodes has failed .

It is also possible that the voltage regulator has failed or is intermittently failing. The voltage regulator is part of the computer in the 92 and 93's. It is common for the regulator to fail while the the rest of the computer still functions properly. In these cases I will install a remote regulator as the older trucks used. I have a special regulator that has a manual external voltage adjustment . This is also good for trucks that have under or over charge problems. Most of the currently available regulators are only 4 amp and rather low quality. The one I use is 8amp and adjustable.

They are rather inexpensive also. I do have to buy 50 of them at a time to get them made however

Genos

The alternator on my W250 quit this summer. I had another alternator to replace it with but I got the kit from Genos and rebuilt the bad one. I haven't tried it yet, but the rebuild is easy and cheaper than another alternator
