My half ton conversion.

Ok here it goes. On my conversion I had been having some alternator troubles. I ,like many wanted to use the dodge alt. with a dodge regulator setup.

I was blowing regulators no matter what I did. Also when it did work properly I experienced the surge or flickering at idle of the lights and gauge.

From what I read this is common with the old dodge designed regulators.

The local alt shop explained the regulator uses a ground signal to adjust the output of the alt by changing the field etc...

After 45-50 min just BSing and looking through catalogs etc. . we found a cure. Ive been running this setup for a month or so now and it is working perfect.

Basically this will convert the dodge alt to a 1 wire setup( really a 2 wire, 1 pos to the batt and 1 ground) with NO internal mods, so if your out on the road in the middle of nowhere and your alt dies you can just go the local parts house and get a new one and put it in.

We had discussed adding an internal regulator but I wanted to keep the alt stock in the case a roadside repair ever came up.

He found me a small ( a little bigger than a book of matches) regulator that mounts on the outside case of the alt. This reg works off the positive side and not the ground to regulate voltage. It attaches th one of the outer case bolts and it has little pigtales that connect to the connections on the back of alt.

Its even adjustable with a small screw on the back of the reg.

The part numbers on the little box are as follows.

description- VR STAR CS130

MFR PART # TPO D7050

The cost is $42. 50 for the part and since they allready had my alt on the bench for testing he installed it in about 5 min( including the solder and heatshrink on the wires) for free.

If your local shop cant find what you need using these numbers heres who I got it from. I am not affialiated with these guys in any way except as a happy customer.

They are located in Ogden,Ut

They are great to deal with and will point you in the right direction finding what you need and will probably sell you the part if your local guy gives you that deer in the headlights look when you tell them what you want.

Anyway I couldnt find out much when I was searching so hopefully this will help out some of you other guys.

Doesnt matter what you swapped your cummins into as this will work easily
