Well,,after knocking on my alternator with a hammer for the last week,,i guess it's time for a new one,,

Anyone have advice on a good one,,the local parts store has a NEW bosh with a 5 year warranty,,Napa has one with lifetime warranty. .

i'm not looking the best price,,i would like the best alternator. .

Recommendations would be appreciated

I replaced my original with the Bosch, new not the reman. , and have been very satisfied with it.

I also got the higher output one to deal with the extra electrical accessories and keep the a batteries a little happier when the grid heater cycles.



BTW, make sure you size the serpentine belt pulley on the new one, as it may be narrower than the one on your truck. You will need to exchange them if it is the narrow one on the new alternator. Also a good time to replace the serpentine belt while your at it. :)

Not sure if you're interested in it, but at the fire department we have taken our alternators to a local "diesel electric" shop that deals specifically with alternators & starters. They rebuilt the stock alternators on our rescue & district chiefs rides with heavier everything. They charge much better and are much heavier duty now. I had mine re-done with an extra 30 or so amps. Also had the starter redone with the heavier contacts etc. Everything works excellent.

I have put a few alternators in my truck and here is my 2 cents: Avoid remans if possible, I have had 2 different brands that lasted less than 20K. I would either by a new one or take yours to a starter/alternator shop and have them rebuild it. The last one I put in, I bought a new aftermarket alternator (could not find a new OEM for less than $400) and took the one that was in my truck and had it rebuilt for a spare.

I had my original rebuilt at a good starter/alt shop after 200K cost about $80, I expect it to last another 200K.

I had mine rebuilt and cleaned at a local shop here in Nashville about a year ago. It's been working great and cost me about $35. 00.

Take it to a local shop, tell em to do what ever it needs. For a lot of years I've had much better luck this way than buying from a autosupply vendor.



To test diodes, clean, and install brushes a few weeks ago cost $20 took the old guy (way out in the country shop) all of 10 prehaps 15 minutes.



My 225,000 mile unit's working like new.

Agree. I worked at an auto parts store and heard too MANY stories of junk rebuilt alts from chain stores. Buy new or local rebuild. if rebuild be sure to replace EVERYTHING as bearings can seize like mine did @ 200k and cracked the case! New belt is a given, keep the old one as a spare. Inspect or replace the tensioner bearings too if needed. ;)
 
I was in a bind and bought one from Auto Zone and it has worked fine but I took my original to a guy that builds alternators and starters locally. I prefer taking my stuff to him because he rebuilds them correctly.
