Archived alternator

My truck is broke and I just bought it 2 days ago. While driving the truck home the first night the voltage guage kept going down until eventually my lights went dim and the truck started getting really loud. I pulled off at the fire department and the were nice and let me use there charger enough to get the final 3 miles home. Now I have taken the alternator off and had it tested this morning and they told me the alternator tested fine. They also told me the voltage regulator is in the computer. Which computer are they talking about and do you all think this will fix my problem. They also checked the battery does it make a difference that this truck has two batteries. If one of the batteries is bad will this cause this problem or is it definatly the voltage regulator. I hate to replace this 600 dollar computer just to find out it is something else. If anyone has any informations or knows where I can get the best price for this computer I would appreciate it. Just searching for the right fix.

Eric is it the 1999 you speak of in your signature?

Eric check your alternator fuse it is in the fuse box under the hood

it has a screw holding it in

Eric,

Voltage regulator is incorporated into your PCM. I believe it's abrevation is VSS (would have to look at s/m).



Get the codes off PCM this should lead you right to the problem.



Besides the fuse(which if it is the fuse you will have to find why the fuse blew).



The battey temp sensor/wires/connector under driver's side battery. If not sending data vss will not tell alternator to charge.



On 12v engines the engine speed sensor/wires/connector could cause problems, I would imagine the crank speed sensor/wires/connector mite cause the same type of problem on a 24 v. If sensor did not turn on asd relay line voltage is not being sent to vss which cause same problem, no charge coming out of alternator



Check sensor ground wires/connetions



Batteries need to be checked seperately not while hooked up in- line.

I got it up and going it was the fuse. Thanks to everyone for helping me. So far it has been a couple of days and the fuse is still working.
