I talked to someone that is considering buying a '03. Said the new engine has an aluminum head. I tried a search on this forum but nothing came back.

Is this true? Aluminum head? After all the BS that was going around here about the aluminum heads on the Chevy rigs, I would expect to see a little more discussion about it if the Cummins starts using.

Any know about this?

Stan

I haven't read a thing about it (and I've read everything I can get my hands on about the 3rd gen), and I can't believe they'd actually do that.

I hope this is a joke thread. I will give you $1,000 for every aluminum headed Cummins engine in a 2003 Dodge Truck built.  :D :D

I seriously doubt it!!!:D The valve cover looks like cast aluminum but the head itself looks like cast iron. FWIW

Paccool, sorry, I never know how to read a thread. I honestly thought it was a pull-in for newbies or something like that. To answer your question, no, the new Common Rail engine from Cummins that are being put in the 2003 trucks that Dodge is selling does not have an aluminum head. That is a fact. I hope this qualms your fears of the BS. :D

I guess the guy from Detroit that travels all over the US with the Dodge diesel truck that they had at Dave Smith Motors, last weekend, didn't know what he was talking about. I was there friday for about one hour, a lot of people were talking about it having an aluminum head, I asked the salesman, he said he didn't know. He did pointed to a guy from Detroit, he said he is the one who travels all over the US with this truck, he would know. I asked the guy and he said yes it does. I didn't see any Cummins reps at the jamboree, so I wasn't able to ask and make sure.

I hope you are right, I had hopes to buy an 03 next year, but I don't want an aluminum head.

Send me an email and I will send you back a picture of the engine that was in the test mule at Thunder in Muncie this past June. Not a great picture but you can see the only thing aluminum is the valve cover.

Rodney, I don't know which one of you has that name, but let me or us know what your impression is of the picture I just sent you. I work for a DC Dealer and have for the past 25 years. I know we are the last to get good information, but the Cummins Rep that was at Thunder in Muncie gave a good overview of the engine and at no time did he ever talk about an aluminum head. I am sure he would have if this was the case and probably would have made a big deal about it.

Back in May of this year I attended a Cummins Power Boosters meeting in Portland. They had a member of the design team giving an overview of the new common rail engine. One of the points he made was that the only thing the common rail engine and the ISB had in common was the head - the block is completely redesigned. The head is not aluminum.

NO ALUMINUM HEADS

The New MY03 Engine does not have aluminum heads. It is a similar head to the current product since '98. 5MY with 4 valves but has retuned intake ports to accommodate the higher injection pressures. I doubt we will ever consider an aluminum head for this application.

My Father retired as a Special machine engineer and worked on several projects for Consolidated Diesel Corp (CDC) otherwise known as Cummins. He worked on machines with the CDC engineers for the ISB (encore), and the new ECHO motor. Mainly block work on the Echo (thicker skirting for noise, cross bolted mains..... The head is IRON. Cummins did build an engine entirely out of aluminum. From what I was told, it did not survive their rigorous testing. .

The only alumnium 5. 9 I've seen was in the Cummins testing faculity. It was a good old 12 valve with a p pump. There were a few tore apart in there and we got to look at them and they were cast iron.
