Considering an exhaust system for my 06. Any advice on going aluminum or stainless steel and why. Thanks

I put stainless on my 98 and then got rid of the truck so this time I went with aluminized steel exhaust it should last 7-10 years and I dont know if I will still have this truck in that amount of time

CContreras,

You already have 4 inch pipes why throw them away and pay for new ones?? Plus you have stainless as well. Look at one of the mufflers that are straight thru desinged and are also designed to reuse the stock rubber mounts and work with the offset in the stock muffler. Sounds great, looks mostly stock and saves you money for other mods too!! MBRP and AFE both make them.

Mark @ DPPI

He is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!! Why pay a bunch of $$$ you dont need to... Just upgrade the muffler with a high flow one. Factory exhuast is very high quality and does not have any more bends than aftermarket systems and you can use the extra coin on other mods. I would say these CTD have the most free flowing and biggest exhaust out there but a very restrictive muffler.

Great Call Mark!

One point. . I agree with the guys above... but remember your not buying aluminum pipes your buying aluminum coated steel to prevent rust... In some cases... this is better than stainless as stainless can react to some acids and go away faster... but where heat and acids are present than the stainless is preferred over the aluminum coated steel...

I have some larger trucks... one has a 10 L CAT engine and that exhaust is only a 4" system... . and CAT felt it was OK... our 4" on the CTD should be fine... . upgrade the muffler or put Geno's straight thru pipe on... . just my thoughts...

I figure by the time my aluminized muffler rots off, I'll be ready for a different sound anyway.

Mark C, do you have a muffler that's sized properly to work as a cat "test pipe". I wanna loose the cat, but don't want any extra noise.

I would go with MBRP. They make a direct fit muffler that is stainless steel and comes with a 10 year warranty. Most companies only offer a 1 year warranty on the aluminized mufflers and there is no guarantee if the muffler is going to last past that 1 year.

Mark, Can I ask a quick question on the MBRP replacement muffler? How is install? I don't have a welder or any air tools. Can I replace it in my driveway with hand tools only?

I would like the give Mark a shout out for always being so helpful on the forums. Never pushing anything, just giving the info he has. Thanks!
