My eagle rims took a beating this fall. They are pretty nasty looking. They look 10 years old rather than 8 months. Anyways I need a polisher and protecter. Anyone have any recomendations?? A friend of mine highly recommended Flitz? any thoughts?

Discovered this at the Portland Roadster Show a few years ago.

Fine results, but the big thing is much less labor intensive to work with. It's a liquid. I apply with one of those soft sponge pads you can find at most good auto supply stores. Goes on and polishes off with micro-fibre or 100% cotton cloth baby diapers very easy.

Mother's, Maguiers, Boyds, etc. all work well, but they take a lot of work, primarily because they are paste.

Same here. The Blue Magic stuff is really good, and available at Walmart. The car wash used it on my rims after they messed them up with some kind of acidic industrial cleaner they used on them.

What keep me away from polishing is all the elbow grease that must go into it.

... Anyways I need a polisher and protecter...

I've used a product called Zoop Seal as a protector. I applied it for the first time to my uncoated aluminum wheels late last summer to see how they'd hold up to the de-icer they use around here in the winter. Zoop Seal is some sort of hybrid ceramic coating. Not permanent, but supposedly long-lasting. So far, it appears my rear wheels are still tarnishing a bit from the de-icer. However, this spring they may clean up a lot easier. We'll see. Do a Google search on the web for the product and you'll find a number of suppliers and info.

As for the polish, there are a number of products you can use, but I think all will take some elbow grease. I did my wheels with a pneumatic 1/4" die grinder and a bunch of cheap throw-away polishing buffs (2" dia. ) and a tub of Mothers polish. Still took a good hour or more per wheel to clean them up. Not fun.

Jay,

Where are you getting your cheap throw-away polishing buffs? I'd like to find some and let my drill or die grinder handle some of the elbow grease. :D

Thanks,

Chris

wow, so many differant opinions! lol. I'm trying to be lazy and not use elbow grease, but I guess I just gotta do it! Thanks guys, still undecied what I will try, but I will let ya know what I come up with.

Do your wheels have a rough finish or a smooth polished finish? If it's smooth I recommend using Eaglo one's Nevr-dull first to get the pitting, contaminents, etc off the wheel (it comes in a black metal can and can be found at most auto parts places). It will leave a slightly dull finish. Then use Blue Magic as suggested above to bring back the shine. My wife had Eagle 589 wheels on her Jeep that she ran year round and I had to shine them up every spring. I tried a bunch of different products and that was the best I ever came up with. What I always did was had a set of steel wheels that I put on the truck in winter and only ran the nice aluminum wheels in summer. The best thing you can do is go to a coin car wash several times a week and spray off your wheel so it's not sitting on the wheel doing damage.

Stamey,

The buffer was found at a local new/used tool store (not a chain). Attached is a photo of one. They were about $5 each.

Aluminum Polish

I got some stuff thats called way2ez it works really well on clean and dirty aluminum wheels and alot less work than mothers. Oo.

Stamey go to Menards.

Safety-Kleen carries 1 gallon cans of "451 Red" Fast Cut polish. One can is under 20 bucks and will last you a lifetime. I normally dont share this secret, but today i'm feeling generous.

First acid wash your wheel (aviously non clearcoated wheel) then polish with this pastey cream. Were talkin mirror finish here. Also works sweet on semi fuel tanks, etc. I've even done alum. diamond plate with it. (kindof hard on the pad)

My rims have some small knooks, so John Menard sold me a air polisher for about 15 bucks, that gets in all the tight spaces.

I have been using Ouater that I got at bumper to bumper. It shines up the tool box in my truck real nice. It even put a nice shine on the ski pole in my boat that had a satin look to it. I'll go after it again and it will be shining like a diamond in a goats butt.

mothers mag & alminuum polish works really well.

This is what I use for EVERYTHING! it works great! You can polish satin aluminum in a matter of no time. I use it to polish the frames on honda Dirt bikes also. Wonderful stuff.

America's Truck Wash & Chrome Shop

Go to the polishes, and they have a wide assortment of polishes in there. I like the Magic Mix personally, as well as the White Diamond. Don't go to the auto parts store for polish. You will not get very far with some of the cheap stuff. I ride on ALCOA's and they are not clear coated. Trust me, I have gone through all the cheap crap, and highly recommend using something like the ones listed above. Just an honest 2 cents worth!
